The Christian Compass...
Sunday 4 October 2026
A word to start — the direction of travel
Good morning, and welcome. By His grace another week of the walk is behind us, and He has been faithful in every day of it.
Last week ran outward — repentance, the false confidence of the natural man, the high street, and a life the world reads before it ever reads the Book. Some of you will have had a door shut and a cold shoulder for your trouble; others will have had a conversation you did not expect and are still thinking about. Both count the same. The seed went out, and the increase was never your department.
This coming week turns the needle the other way — inward and upward, to worship: what it actually is, and who it is for. That is not a change of direction so much as the other half of the same walk. A believer with nothing to offer God in the quiet has very little to carry to anybody in the street, and a believer who is always out and never bowed will soon be running on his own steam. Out to men, back to God, and round again — that is the shape of a Christian week.
This week we looked at repentance and the call to reach out
Four days on one theme: turning to God ourselves, and then telling others — because a believer who has genuinely repented cannot sit still for long.
Monday 28 September — Something to Think About — Repent or Die!
Two roads, two eternities, one word. Repentance is not regret — it is a change of mind that becomes a change of direction. The wage of sin is eternal death, yet there is no condemnation for those who repent and believe. While there is breath there is time: repent, and live.
Tuesday 29 September — Messages from the Outpost — Saved in the End? Why the Natural Man Thinks He'll Make It Regardless
Most people presume they will be alright in the end, however they are living. But God's patience is not God's approval, and delay is not pardon. Salvation is never earned, yet a life untouched by God shows the new birth never happened. Repent, be born again, and build on the Rock.
Wednesday 30 September — Write this Down — Street Evangelism: Does It Work?
Yes — but not by the world's scoreboard. It is measured by faithfulness, not footfall. We sow; God gives the increase. The tract binned on the high street still carried truth past somebody's eyes, and the Word never returns void. So the question is not “how many stopped?” but “is the seed going out?”
Thursday 1 October — Messages from the Outpost — Proof of Concept!
If the Bible is the concept, the believer is the proof. We are living epistles, read by people who may never open the Book — in the queue, in traffic, when the bills come in heavy. The concept does not need defending so much as demonstrating. The missing piece is you.
Friday 2 October — Back to Basics: Christian living — Part 3 — The Secret Now Made Plain (Ephesians 3)
Paul's mystery is not a riddle but a secret now revealed, so that when ye read, ye may understand. Jew and Gentile are one body and fellowheirs, with boldness and access by faith. Paul prays for strength in the inner man, and closes on eight words that change everything: according to the power that worketh in us.
Void means empty. God's Word never comes back empty-handed — you will not always see what it is doing, but it is never doing nothing.
All five are up with the teachings, and every one has its matching video on the channel.

🎯 This Week's Mission
This one comes straight out of the four days just gone — the step that week leaves you with, carried into the week ahead.
Your mission this week: sow one seed
Every week the Word gives us something to carry — not just to know, but to do. Here's your one step for the week ahead…
You do not need a pulpit, a platform or a plan. You need one person and one seed. The results were never yours to produce — only the sowing is.
👣 Your step: sow one seed. One tract, one kind conversation, one verse spoken gently to one person — and then leave the increase to God. Do not wait until you feel successful before you obey.
❓ Walk it out: who is the one person God has already put in front of you this week — and what is stopping you from saying something?
📖 This week's mission verse:
Don't overthink it. One seed. One act of obedience. Do that, and let God do the rest.

The week ahead — worship: what it is, and who it is for
Last week we went out to men; this week we come back to God. The theme in one line: worship is not what we receive, but what we render. Monday separates praise from worship, Tuesday asks who worship is really for, Wednesday exposes worship that has turned into performance, and Thursday weighs our praise from heaven's side of things. Then Friday brings Part 4 — Walk Worthy, the hinge of the whole letter, where everything God has done turns into how it is walked.
Monday 5 October — Something to Think About — Praise & Worship: What They Mean & How They Differ
Modern church vocabulary has quietly shrunk worship down to a music style — praise is the fast part, worship is the slow part — and in doing so it has reduced something holy and weighty to a musical moment. Scripture will not allow it. Hebrews puts the order back: the sacrifice for sin is finished, offered once for all in the body of Christ, so nothing we bring is a payment and nothing we sing completes the cross. What we now offer is a response — the sacrifice of praise, through Christ, continually, the fruit of thankful lips — and the very next verse refuses to let it stop at the lips, calling doing good and sharing with others sacrifices God is well pleased with. That means worship has to reach Monday morning: the way we treat people, the way we use money, the way we obey Scripture when nobody is clapping. Praise is what you express to God; worship is what you offer Him — and the honest test is not whether the songs moved you, but whether you are keeping His commandments. Sometimes praise really is a sacrifice, not because God needs our music, but because the flesh resists giving thanks when life hurts — and the command still says continually. So let us keep singing, and keep the words true: thankful lips and obedient living, offered to the One who gave everything…
Tuesday 6 October — Messages from the Outpost — Worship: For Him or For Us?
Worship is not about what we receive, but what we render to God. When we judge worship by how it made us feel, we turn it into a consumer experience shaped around our desires. The better question is not “What did I get from this?” but “Did I honour God?” True worship costs something. It calls us to present ourselves as a living sacrifice and to offer praise continually. Worship does not end when the music stops; it is a way of life lived for the glory of the One who alone is worthy…
Wednesday 7 October — Write this Down — Quiet Before the Lord: When Worship Turns into Performance
There is a sickness creeping through the modern church, and it is neither doctrinal error nor persecution — it is the theatre of false devotion. Shouting to be heard, dancing to be seen, kneeling to be admired — it sounds like praise, but it is feeding the ego, and Jesus named its wage plainly: they have their reward — loud, hollow and perishing. The soul is an excellent impersonator; it can pray, weep and quote Scripture with real force even when the Holy Spirit is not its source. God is not mocked. He ponders the heart and sees the reason behind the shout. What He asks for instead is the shut door, the audience of One — and quiet has never meant weak. So examine it honestly, and if you find pride there, repent of it. The day is coming when fire will try every work, and only what was offered to God alone will still be standing…
Thursday 8 October — Messages from the Outpost — Worship From Heaven's Perspective — Is Our Praise Pleasing to God?
Worship is not a feeling we chase — it is a response we bring, weighed against one question: does this honour God according to His Word, or does it simply make us feel good? The modern church has learned to borrow from the world's toolbox — atmosphere, staging, sensory experience — but the beauty of holiness [Psalm 29:2 KJV] is not the beauty of trendiness. True praise begins with God's perspective, not ours; we are not consumers but sons and daughters redeemed by Christ's blood. The early church needed no staging or sensationalism — only the apostles' doctrine, fellowship, and prayer [Acts 2:42 KJV]. If a practice cannot be found in, justified by, or built up by Scripture, it has no place in the assembly of the saints…
Friday 9 October — Back to Basics: Christian living — Part 4 — Walk Worthy (Ephesians 4)
Ephesians 4 is the hinge of the letter. I therefore… beseech you that ye walk worthy — because of all God has already done, live like it. The worthy walk is not platform or reputation but lowliness, meekness, longsuffering and forbearing love, with real effort put into keeping the unity of the Spirit that God has already made in one body. God gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to equip ordinary believers for the work of the ministry and to grow them up, so that they are no longer children tossed about by every wind of doctrine, but people who speak the truth in love. Then the chapter gets specific: put off the old man, be renewed in the spirit of your mind, put on the new — truth instead of lying, anger dealt with before sunset, honest work so you have something to give, words that minister grace, and kindness and forgiveness in place of bitterness. Much of it is about the tongue. Change that, and most of the Christian walk changes with it…
📖 Only in the Compass — We Cast No Shadow
Peter's shadow healed the sick in the street. Why does ours heal no one?
There is a strange little detail tucked into Acts chapter five, easy to read straight past. God was doing such signs and wonders among the believers that people began laying their sick out in the streets — not to touch Peter, not even to speak to him, but simply so that his shadow might fall across them as he walked by. Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them [Acts 5:15 KJV] — and they were healed, every one. So ask the question honestly: if Peter's shadow healed the sick, what does ours do?
It was never about Peter. Chapter four tells us exactly where it came from. The believers had just been threatened and told to stop preaching, and instead of protecting themselves, they prayed. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness [Acts 4:31 KJV]. We so often get that order backwards. We want the shadow without the shaking, the power without the prayer. But the shadow was simply the overflow of a church that was full. It was never the point. It was the evidence.
Nothing has changed at the top — Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever [Hebrews 13:8 KJV]. What has changed is us. Where is the one-accord praying that shook the room? Where is the boldness that spoke regardless of the cost? And where is the holiness that leaves nothing hidden between us and Him? But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear [Isaiah 59:2 KJV]. That is not a verse about the lost. It is about a people whose sin has come between them and the God they are crying out to.
So we do not start by asking God for a shadow. We start where they started — on our faces, together, praying until the room shakes, speaking the word without flinching, and dealing honestly with whatever has come between us and Him. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much [James 5:16 KJV]. That was never magic; it was overflow. Nothing is stopping us but ourselves…

Our battle with the links 🔗 — and where to find them
I will be honest with you — these last few weeks, the links have had the better of us. Elaine and I would post something, put the address underneath, and then find out that on some sites it simply would not work. You could see it sitting there, plain as day, but tap it and nothing happened. It is a bit like handing somebody a door with no handle.
So here is what we found. On Facebook and X, the links work when they go out with a video post, and under our full-length videos on YouTube they work as they should — one tap and you are there. But on Threads, Instagram and TikTok they just sit there doing nothing, and the same goes for YouTube Shorts and for any post that is words only, wherever it goes up.
So rather than leave you knocking on a door that will not open, we have put everything in one place for you — the Linktree in our bio. On Threads, Instagram and TikTok, on YouTube Shorts, and on any post that is words only, that is where to look. One tap, and you will find Who We Are in Christ! — the teachings to start with and the videos to watch alongside them — and everything else besides. Everywhere else, the link is right there in the post, ready and waiting.

Ephesians: The Letter Written to You — where we are
If you have come in part way through the Friday series, you have not missed the boat. The Overview and Parts 1 to 3 are all up with the teachings, each with its matching video on the channel, and they are best read in order — start with the Overview, then chapter one, two and three. This Friday brings Part 4 — Walk Worthy, so there is still time to catch up before it lands…

Testimony
This is the spot where we print what God has done — one account a week, in the person's own words, never printed without permission and never with a name on it unless you say so. This week it is Elaine's.
Most people don't know this, but Back to Basics doesn't run on donations. It runs on mops, dusters, a diary full of work and other people's house keys. David and I have a little housekeeping business called At Your Services 365, and it is the Lord who has kept it going.
Over the years we've had clients, mostly elderly, move on. People move home and circumstances change. When that happens it's a wobble, especially if that client had a lot of hours. We pray about finding someone to fill the gap, and every single time, before we've had time to think about it properly, the phone rings and someone is there to fill it. Sometimes it's within hours, sometimes the next day, but the gap is always filled within a few days.
We have never had to go looking for work. The work turns up at the right time. Our prayer has always been a very simple one: Lord, give us clients we can genuinely help, and let that work pay for what You have called us to do. That's all. And God has answered that prayer year after year.
Every teaching, every video, every Compass has been paid for out of somebody's clean kitchen. How amazing is that? At the moment we're praying for clients closer to home. Less time on the road would mean more time for me to be involved in the everyday running of Back to Basics, and I would really love that. So I keep believing the verse:
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus [Philippians 4:19 KJV].
We have seen God supply our need so many times that it still amazes me. We have a faithful God, who keeps true to His word.
— Elaine
Notice how simple that is. No polish and no sermon — just what happened, and what God did. That is all a testimony is, and it is all we are asking for.
If God has done something in your life, big or small, reply to this email, or write to backtobasicschristianliving@gmail.com with Testimony in the subject line. It need not have a happy ending yet — “this is what happened” is enough. It is not for our encouragement; it is for the believer three streets away who needs to hear that God still moves.
If you are just joining us
Start with the Start Here page, which sits with the teachings. It gives you the seven teachings to read first — Who We Are in Christ!, in order — and a video playlist of the same name to watch alongside them. Nothing to sign up for, and about ten minutes each morning.
One ask: before next Sunday, give God ten minutes with nothing on — no music, no phone, no list of requests. Just you and Him, quiet. If that sounds like the easiest thing in this email, ask yourself honestly when you last did it. And if this letter has helped you, send it to one person who needs it.
➡️ Tomorrow morning — Monday 5 October — Something to Think About — Praise & Worship: What They Mean & How They Differ
The week starts here. The teaching and its video go up together first thing, so read it over your morning cuppa and carry it into the day.
