Your Calling!

You’re asking the wrong question?

For years believers have come at this subject the same way the world does. We ask, what is my calling? — as though it were a job title waiting to be discovered, a hidden role with our name stamped on it. And so we hunt. We wait. We feel guilty that we still haven't "found" it. But Scripture rarely answers the what first. It answers the who. Before God ever tells you what to do, He tells you whose you are. Get that order wrong and you will spend your whole life chasing a calling you already possess.

You were called before you were useful

Here is where it begins, and it levels every one of us. Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began [2 Timothy 1:9 KJV]. Read that slowly. Not according to our works. Your calling was not earned by your gifting, your usefulness, or your track record. It was handed to you by grace, settled before you ever drew a breath — before you had done a single thing right or wrong.

That cuts both ways. It means the impressive believer has no head start, and the struggling believer is no afterthought. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called [1 Corinthians 1:26 KJV]. God has never built His kingdom out of the qualified. He builds it out of the called.

Your first calling is not a position

Ask most Christians what they're called to and they'll name a task — preaching, music, missions, business. But the New Testament's first answer is not a task at all. God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord [1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV]. Fellowship with Christ is the calling; everything else is simply the outworking of it.

And before you were called to anything, you were called out of something. Who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light [1 Peter 2:9 KJV]. That is the calling no believer is exempt from. If you have been brought out of darkness, you are already a called man, a called woman — whatever your postcode, your payslip, or your platform.

Your calling is to become before it is to do

We are so fixed on doing that we skip clean over what God puts first — being. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness [1 Thessalonians 4:7 KJV]. There it is, plain. Long before God concerns Himself with your role, He concerns Himself with your character. The first shape of every calling is the same: that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work [Colossians 1:10 KJV].

This is the part the old "find your purpose" talks tend to miss. You can hit every external target — the ministry, the influence, the open doors — and still miss your calling entirely, because the calling was never first about what you achieved. It was about who you became in Christ along the way.

The "where" is smaller than you think

When God does turn to the what and the where, He almost always points us downward, not upward — to the small, the daily, the unseen. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much [Luke 16:10 KJV]. Heaven measures calling by faithfulness, not by size. The mother on the school run, the worker on the site, the believer praying quietly at a kitchen table — these are not waiting for their calling. They are walking it. Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God [1 Corinthians 10:31 KJV]. The word whatsoever leaves no ordinary moment out.

A calling you won't obey isn't a calling

Here is the line that divides a real calling from a daydream. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV]. A calling you admire but never act on is no calling at all — it is self-deception. Peter pressed the same point: give diligence to make your calling and election sure [2 Peter 1:10 KJV]. Notice it — give diligence. You confirm your calling not by feeling it, but by walking in it. Obedience is how a calling stops being a notion and becomes a life.

So stop waiting for the lightning bolt. You already know the next step — the forgiveness you've been withholding, the prayer you keep delaying, the Bible you keep closing, the person God keeps placing on your heart. Take it. A calling is confirmed one obedient step at a time.

So what is your calling?

Here is the whole of it, plainly. You are called out of darkness, called unto Christ, called to be holy, called to walk worthy, and called to be faithful right where God has already set you down. The role may change a dozen times across your life. The calling never does. Stop hunting for it as though it were lost. Start walking it as though it were given — because it is.
