Be Patient, Be Present, Be Deliberate

Facing adversity with Christian resilience — be where your feet are, because complacency is a killer…
Be Patient, Be Present, Be Deliberate

Trouble Will Come

Nobody ever sold you a Christian life without trouble in it — or if they did, they sold you something the Bible never offered. Adversity does not knock and ask permission. It turns up in a diagnosis, a redundancy letter, a marriage under strain, a child who has wandered, or simply a long, grey season where nothing seems to move. And here is the thing: how you meet trouble will tell you, quicker than any testimony, what your faith is actually built on. When the storm hits, it shows up the foundation. So how should a believer react when adversity comes? Not with panic, and not with a stiff upper lip either. Scripture gives us three words to carry into the hard week: be patient, be present, be deliberate.

Be Patient — God Is Working in the Waiting

When difficulty comes, everything in us wants it gone, and wants it gone today. We pray for the way out before we have even asked what God might be doing in the way through. But listen to Paul: And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope [Romans 5:3-4 KJV]. Did you catch that? Tribulation is not the interruption of God's work in you. It is the workshop. Patience is not handed out at the door; it is worked into you, and it is worked in through the very thing you are asking Him to take away.

James says the same: My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing [James 1:2-4 KJV]. Notice that little word "let". Patience has to be allowed to finish. Cut it short with your own hurry — your own fixes, your own deadlines — and you come out the other side "wanting". God's timing is not slow. It is deliberate. He is never late; He is thorough.

Be Present — Be Where Your Feet Are

Most of us are not living in today at all. We are living in next month's bills, next year's worries, or last year's regrets. We lie awake at two in the morning rehearsing conversations that have not happened yet. The Lord Jesus spoke straight into that: Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof [Matthew 6:34 KJV]. Today's grace was given for today's trouble. It was never given for the trouble you are borrowing from tomorrow. So be where your feet are.

A believer who is present is available — available to hear God, and close enough to be led. That is what it means to Pray without ceasing [1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV]: not round-the-clock prayers behind monastery walls, but an open line kept open through the ordinary hours of a hard day. And being present means being honest. Not putting on the Sunday smile and saying "I'm fine" when you are anything but. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed [James 5:16 KJV]. The church was never meant to be a room full of people pretending. Present means real — before God, and before His people.

Be Deliberate — Because Complacency Is a Killer

Here is the truth nobody likes: you will never drift into faith. Nobody accidentally chooses hope over despair, or love over bitterness. In a hard week every one of those is chosen, and chosen against something easier. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil [Ephesians 5:15-16 KJV]. Circumspectly means with your eyes open, watching where you put your feet. That is deliberate living. And it goes for how you are fed, too. Prayer, the Word, the company of believers — these are decided on, never drifted into. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works [Hebrews 10:23-24 KJV]. Hold fast. Consider one another. Those are choices.

Now hear this, because it is the real danger. It is rarely some dramatic collapse that finishes a believer off. It is complacency. It comes quietly — as distraction, as denial, as a slow disengagement where the Bible stays shut a little longer each week and the prayer life shrinks to grace before meals. Nobody announces it. You just settle, bit by bit, for less than God offered you. That is why the warning is written: Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip [Hebrews 2:1 KJV]. Things slip. Faith rarely falls off a cliff; it slides down a gentle slope. And adversity is often the very thing that shows us how far we had already slid.

But if you feel a long way off right now, do not lose heart. Look where the Lord stands: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit [Psalm 34:18 KJV]. He is nearest at the very point you feel furthest. He has not walked away from your trouble. He is in it with you — working patience, giving today's grace, and calling you to choose Him again. So be patient. Be present. Be deliberate. And watch God take the trial you are in and turn it into a testimony of His faithfulness…

👣 Walk it out: name the trouble you are actually in — say it to God plainly, no dressing it up — then choose one deliberate thing today: twenty minutes with an open Bible, the prayer you have been putting off, or an honest word to a believer who will tell you the truth...

Key Takeaways:

  • Trouble is not a detour from the Christian life — it is the ground where patience is worked in us — [Romans 5:3-4 KJV]
  • Patience has to be allowed to finish its work; cut it short with your own hurry and you are left wanting — [James 1:2-4 KJV]
  • Being present means taking today's grace for today's trouble instead of borrowing tomorrow's fear — [Matthew 6:34 KJV]
  • The believer who is present is available — praying without ceasing, and honest with others about the struggle — [1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV], [James 5:16 KJV]
  • Deliberate means chosen: faith over fear, hope over despair, love over bitterness — [Ephesians 5:15-16 KJV]
  • Deliberate also means fed — prayer, the Word and the company of believers are decided on, never drifted into — [Hebrews 10:23-24 KJV]
  • Complacency is the killer — faith rarely falls off a cliff; it slips — [Hebrews 2:1 KJV]
  • God is nearest at the point where we feel furthest — [Psalm 34:18 KJV]

Where to go from here:

Read James 1:1-12 KJV slowly, and notice that the trial and the crown sit in the same passage — the trying of your faith and the reward of enduring it. Then take the step above today: name the trouble, and choose one deliberate thing.
