Have People Forgotten What Church Is?
Ask the question and watch the answers
Ask a dozen people what church is and you will get a dozen answers, and nearly all of them will point at something you can drive to. A building on the corner. A service at half past ten. A denomination, a name over the door, a style of music, a man in a pulpit. Say "I'm going to church" and everybody in the room knows the postcode you mean. And that is exactly where the confusion starts, because the New Testament never once uses the word that way. Not a single time does Scripture call a building the church. The word means a called-out people — those God has called out of the world and joined to His Son. So when we use the word for bricks and an hour in the diary, we are not being sloppy with language only; we are being sloppy with the truth, and it shows up in how we live from Monday to Saturday. If church is a place, I can attend it and stay unchanged. If church is who I am, I cannot.
Jesus Christ said, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it [Matthew 16:18 KJV]. He did not say He would build a chapel. Paul puts it plainer still: Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular [1 Corinthians 12:27 KJV]. Not a crowd, not an audience, not a congregation of strangers who nod on the way out — a body, with every believer a working part of it. And that body has a Head: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all [Ephesians 1:22-23 KJV].
A body with a living Head
That is the piece most people have quietly let go of. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence [Colossians 1:18 KJV]. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, holds that place. Not a committee, not a tradition, not a personality with a microphone. And if He is the Head, then the church is not something that runs on a rota — it is something alive, made up of born-again believers who each have a job to do. God gave teachers and shepherds for a purpose, and the purpose is not a performance: For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ [Ephesians 4:12 KJV]. Read that again. The teaching is meant to equip the saints to do the work — not to do the work for them while they watch. Peter says the same from another side: Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ [1 Peter 2:5 KJV]. Living stones. Not spectators in a pew, but stones built into something God is putting up Himself.
What the first believers actually did
We do not have to guess what church looked like when it was working. It is written down for us in one verse: And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers [Acts 2:42 KJV]. Four things, and not one of them is a building. Doctrine — they were taught the Word and they held to it. Fellowship — real, shared life, not a handshake at the door. Breaking of bread — they ate together and remembered the Lord. Prayers — together, out loud, expecting God to hear. And they continued stedfastly, which is to say they kept at it when it was no longer new. That is why the writer to the Hebrews will not let us drift: And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another [Hebrews 10:24-25 KJV]. Notice what gathering is for — to stir one another up to love and good works. It is not attendance for attendance' sake. And it does not need a big room: For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them [Matthew 18:20 KJV].
Why people sit through it and go home empty
Here is the honest part. Plenty of believers are in a building every week and still starving, and they cannot work out why. Often it is because the one thing the first believers built on has been quietly dropped. Paul saw it coming: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears [2 Timothy 4:3 KJV]. When the Word is thinned out to keep everybody comfortable, you can have lights, songs, coffee and warmth and still leave with nothing to live on. The answer is not to give up and stay home. The answer is to become a Berean: and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so [Acts 17:11 KJV]. Take your Bible with you. Check what you are told. And then do something with it, because that is the point of the whole thing: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV]. If you can sit through a hundred services and nothing changes in your home, your work or your prayers, then something has been forgotten — and it is not the seating plan.
Getting back to what church is
So have people forgotten what church is? Many have, and the cost is high: a Sunday habit instead of a shared life, a building instead of a body, an audience instead of a priesthood. But it is not complicated to get back to it. Know who you are — a member of the body of Christ, with a Head who is alive and a job that is yours. Hold the Word as final. Turn up not to be topped up but to build someone else up. Pray with other believers, eat with them, carry their burdens through the week and let them carry yours. That is church, whether it happens in a hall of five hundred or a kitchen with two. And when it is lived like that, the promise of our theme verse starts showing up in ordinary weeks: That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God [Colossians 1:10 KJV].
Key Takeaways:
- The church is people called out and joined to Christ, never a building — [Matthew 16:18 KJV]
- You are a working part of a body, not a face in an audience — [1 Corinthians 12:27 KJV]
- Jesus Christ is the Head of the church, and He holds that place alone — [Colossians 1:18 KJV]
- Teaching exists to equip the saints for the work, not to do it for them — [Ephesians 4:12 KJV]
- Church at work is doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers, kept up steadily — [Acts 2:42 KJV]
- We gather to stir one another up to love and good works — [Hebrews 10:24-25 KJV]
- Check everything you are taught against the Word, then do it — [Acts 17:11 KJV], [James 1:22 KJV]
Where to go from here:
Read Acts 2:41-47 slowly, with a pen, and mark the four things those believers continued in. Then ask which one is weakest in your own walk this week — the Word, the fellowship, the table or the praying — and put that one right first. Start small and start today.
