What Happens When a Church Falls?
In an age where churches compete for attention with elaborate productions, celebrity pastors, and feel-good messages, we must ask a sobering question: what happens when a church is built on anything other than the solid foundation of God's Word? The answer is clear and biblical—that church will fall.
Jesus himself warned us about this reality in the Sermon on the Mount: "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it" [Matthew 7:24-27 KJV].
The rock is Christ and His Word. The sand is everything else—human wisdom, charismatic personalities, entertaining worship, selective theology, and compromised doctrine. When storms come—and they will come—only that which is built on the rock will stand.
Churches Built on Personality, Not the Word
One of the greatest dangers facing the modern church is the cult of personality. When a church is built around a charismatic leader rather than the teachings of Scripture, it becomes vulnerable to collapse. We've seen this pattern repeatedly throughout church history and in recent scandals.
The Apostle Paul confronted this very issue in the Corinthian church: "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgement. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptised in the name of Paul?" [1 Corinthians 1:10-13 KJV].
When believers follow men rather than Christ, when they say "I am of this pastor" or "I am of that teacher," they lay a faulty foundation. Leaders will fail, disappoint, or fall into sin. Only Christ remains constant.
Churches Built on Music & Entertainment
Modern worship has become increasingly production-focused, with smoke machines, light shows, and concert-quality sound systems. Whilst there's nothing inherently wrong with excellence in worship, problems arise when the music becomes the main draw and the preaching of God's Word takes a back seat.
Some churches attract crowds through emotional musical experiences whilst feeding them spiritual milk—or worse, spiritual poison. Paul warned Timothy: "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables" [2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV].
When doctrine is shaped by what creates the most emotional worship experience rather than by careful study of Scripture, the church has inverted the proper order. Worship should flow from truth, not truth from worship preferences.
Churches Built on False Doctrine
Perhaps the most dangerous foundation is false doctrine itself—teachings that contradict the clear message of Scripture. The prosperity gospel, hyper-grace teaching that ignores repentance, universalism, and countless other errors have infiltrated churches.
Paul was explicit about the importance of sound doctrine: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed" [Galatians 1:8-9 KJV].
False doctrine isn't just incorrect theology—it's spiritually deadly. It leads people away from the true Christ and the true gospel. Churches built on these shifting sands will not withstand the Day of Judgement.
Churches with a Blinkered View of Scripture
Some churches cherry-pick favourite verses whilst ignoring passages that make them uncomfortable. They preach love but not holiness, grace but not judgement, blessing but not suffering. This is not preaching "the whole counsel of God."
Paul told the Ephesian elders: "For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God" [Acts 20:27 KJV]. A balanced diet of Scripture includes the Old Testament and the New, the prophets and the gospels, the epistles and Revelation. It includes both God's love and His wrath, both salvation and sanctification, both comfort and conviction.
When churches avoid difficult passages or controversial topics to maintain popularity or avoid offence, they rob their congregations of the full revelation of God. This imbalanced approach creates spiritually malnourished believers who cannot withstand trials or recognise error.
Churches Using Wrong Translations
The translation of Scripture used in a church matters more than many realise. Whilst various translations can be useful for study, some modern versions have compromised key doctrines through poor translation choices or theological bias. When foundational truths are watered down or altered, the church loses its theological moorings.
God's Word is living and powerful: "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" [Hebrews 4:12 KJV]. But this power is diminished when translations undermine the authority or clarity of the original text.
The Inevitable Fall
When churches combine multiple faulty foundations—a celebrity pastor, entertainment-driven services, selective Scripture, false doctrine, and compromised translations—collapse is not just possible, it's inevitable. It may not happen immediately, but Jesus' words are certain: "and great was the fall of it" [Matthew 7:27 KJV].
History is littered with the ruins of churches and movements that seemed unstoppable in their day but crumbled because they weren't built on the rock of God's Word. The same will be true of many contemporary churches that have substituted biblical faithfulness for relevance and popularity.
Building on the Right Foundation
The solution is both simple and demanding: return to the Word of God as the sole foundation and final authority for all matters of faith and practice. As Paul instructed: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" [2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV].
Churches must preach the whole counsel of God without apology. Leaders must decrease so Christ may increase. Worship must serve the Word, not replace it. Doctrine must be tested against Scripture, not popular opinion.
Only then will the church stand firm when the storms of persecution, cultural pressure, and internal compromise threaten to sweep it away. Only then will we hear the commendation: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" [Matthew 25:21 KJV].
The choice before every church is clear: build on the rock and stand, or build on sand and fall. There is no middle ground…
