Part 8 — The Man Who Stands
Stand when you feel like falling
We have come a long way in this series. We started with identity — a Christian man is a born-again son of God. We moved through calling, the Word, prayer, home, church, and the war with himself. Eight weeks. One thread.
Now the Holy Spirit brings us to the final mark. Not attack. Not advance. Not win.
Stand
That is the closing word of biblical manhood — and it is the closing word of this series. Because in the end, the Christian man's victory is not measured by how many battles he won, but by whether he was still standing at the end of the day, the end of the year, the end of his life.
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong [1 Corinthians 16:13 KJV].
Four commands, one direction: stand.
Stand on whose strength?
Before we talk about how to stand, we have to settle whose strength a Christian man stands in. Because there is a kind of "stand firm" Christianity that is just dressed-up self-effort — grit your teeth, square your shoulders, try harder. That is not what Paul preached.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might [Ephesians 6:10 KJV].
Not in your might. In His.
A Christian man does not stand by being naturally tougher than the next man. He stands because the Lord Jesus Christ has already stood for him, already won for him, and now lives in him by the Spirit to hold him up.
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy [Jude 1:24 KJV].
The Christian man stands — because the Christian man's God keeps him from falling.
That is grace. And that is the only ground strong enough to stand on.
The whole armour, for the long war
Paul gives the most famous battlefield instructions in the New Testament:
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil…
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand [Ephesians 6:11, 13 KJV].
Notice the goal three times: stand. Withstand. Stand. Not crush. Not conquer. Stand.
And notice the armour. None of it is offensive except the sword — the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God [Ephesians 6:17 KJV]. The rest is for standing:
- Truth — girding the loins.
- Righteousness — the breastplate over the heart.
- The gospel of peace — on the feet.
- Faith — the shield, above all.
- Salvation — the helmet over the mind.
- The Word — the sword in the hand.
- Prayer — praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit [Ephesians 6:18 KJV].
That is the kit. That is the daily uniform of a Christian man. He doesn't put it on for special occasions. He puts it on every morning, takes his place on the line, and stands.
What "the evil day" looks like
Paul mentions the evil day. Every Christian man knows it when it lands.
- The day the temptation comes back stronger than ever.
- The day a friend walks away from the faith.
- The day a church wounds you.
- The day a child rebels.
- The day grief hits like a wall.
- The day work collapses.
- The day the lies in your head are louder than the truths in your Bible.
- The day prayer feels like talking to the ceiling.
On those days, a Christian man is not asked to be brilliant. He is asked to be upright. To still be there at sundown. To still be holding the shield. To still be quietly believing the Lord.
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith [1 Corinthians 16:13 KJV].
Faithfulness in the evil day looks ordinary on the outside. On the inside, it is the most powerful Christian witness on earth.
Don't be weary
Paul saw the long game too. He knew the danger wasn't always falling — it was fading.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not [Galatians 6:9 KJV].
Many Christian men do not blow up. They fade out. They get tired. The prayer gets thinner. The Bible gets dustier. The church gets less central. The sins get less troubling. The conscience gets quieter.
Fading is just as deadly as falling. The Spirit's word to the weary man is plain: don't faint. Keep doing the next right thing. The harvest is real. The reward is coming. In due season we shall reap.
A Christian man stands by not quitting. That is most of what perseverance is.
Quit you like men
In one short sentence, Paul gives the whole Christian-man playbook:
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong [1 Corinthians 16:13 KJV].
Four commands. Hold them together.
- Watch ye. Stay alert. Don't drift. Don't get drowsy spiritually. What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch [Mark 13:37 KJV].
- Stand fast in the faith. Hold the gospel. Hold the Word. Hold the doctrine. Don't let the culture, the crowd, or your moods talk you off the rock.
- Quit you like men. Old English for behave like men. Take responsibility. Don't shrink. Don't shift the blame. Stand up.
- Be strong. Strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might [Ephesians 6:10 KJV]. Not bravado — Spirit-given strength.
That is the Christian man's manifesto. That is what the world quietly needs to see again. That is what your home, your church, your generation are waiting for.
How to stand today
Let's bring it right down to where you live.
You don't have to win the whole war today. You don't have to fix every sin today. You don't have to plant every flag today.
You just have to stand today.
That means, this day:
- Open your Bible.
- Pray, even briefly, even badly.
- Show up at home, present and patient.
- Show up at church when the doors are open.
- Refuse the besetting sin one more time.
- Forgive the person you'd rather resent.
- Tell one truth out loud.
- Lift one brother up.
- Do the next right thing in the next right minute.
And when this day ends — do it again tomorrow.
That is standing. That is quitting you like men. That is the long-form obedience that built every faithful Christian man who has ever lived.
The promise to the man who stands
The Christian man who stands is not standing alone, and he is not standing for nothing. The Lord Jesus has spoken a closing word over him:
Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life [Revelation 2:10 KJV].
Faithful unto death. Standing right to the end. And then — a crown. Not because the Christian man was impressive, but because Christ was faithful in him, through him, and for him, every step of the way.
The Word told him who he is.
The Walk shaped how he lived.
The War proved whose strength was holding him up.
And on the last day, the only verdict that matters will be the same word the Lord Jesus speaks over every faithful servant:
Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord [Matthew 25:21 KJV].
That is the end of biblical manhood. Not a trophy. A welcome.
One clear step today
Pick the one area of your Christian life you are most tempted to quit on right now — prayer, the Bible, your marriage, your church, a sin you're losing ground to, a calling you've stopped believing in.
Not to fix it.
Not to win it.
Not to feel anything about it.
Just decide, today, before God, that you will stand one more day.
Open the Bible one more time. Pray one more prayer. Go home one more night with a soft heart. Walk into church one more Sunday. Say no to that sin one more time. Pick the shield back up.
Having done all… to stand [Ephesians 6:13 KJV].
You don't have to win every battle today. You just have to stand.
