Every Day We Fight!
The Call to Daily Commitment
The Christian life is not a passive existence; it is an active, daily battle. From the moment we surrender our lives to Christ, we enter into a spiritual warfare that demands our constant vigilance and unwavering commitment. Every day presents new challenges, new temptations, and new opportunities to stand firm in our faith. This is not a fight we can afford to take lightly, for the stakes are eternal.
The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
The Apostle Paul reminds us of the nature of our struggle: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12, KJV). Our enemy is not primarily other people or difficult circumstances, but the spiritual forces of evil that seek to undermine our faith and destroy our witness.
This warfare is relentless. Peter warns us, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8, KJV). The enemy never takes a day off, and neither can we. Every morning when we wake, we must prepare ourselves for the battle ahead, knowing that our adversary is constantly prowling, looking for any weakness or opportunity to attack.
The Weapons of Our Warfare
Thankfully, we are not left defenceless in this fight. God has provided us with powerful spiritual weapons. Paul instructs us to "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11, KJV). This armour includes truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer (Ephesians 6:14-18, KJV).
Our primary weapon is the Word of God itself. The writer of Hebrews declares, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12, KJV). When Jesus faced temptation in the wilderness, He responded to every attack with Scripture, demonstrating the power of God's Word in spiritual combat (Matthew 4:1-11, KJV).
Prayer is another essential weapon. Paul exhorts us to be "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit" (Ephesians 6:18, KJV). Through prayer, we maintain our connection with our Heavenly Father, receive fresh strength, and access divine power that far exceeds our human limitations.
The Daily Nature of the Battle
Jesus Himself emphasised the daily aspect of following Him: "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me" (Luke 9:23, KJV). Notice the word "daily." This is not a once-for-all decision, but a continual choice to die to self and live for Christ.
Each day brings its own set of challenges. We face temptations to compromise our integrity, opportunities to choose comfort over obedience, and moments when fear threatens to overpower faith. The battle for our minds is constant, as the enemy seeks to plant doubts, foster discouragement, and distort truth. Paul understood this when he wrote, "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:3-5, KJV).
Standing Firm in the Fight
The call to fight does not mean we rely on our own strength. Rather, we are to "be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might" (Ephesians 6:10, KJV). Our victory comes not from human effort but from divine empowerment. As we abide in Christ, His strength becomes ours, and we can accomplish what would be impossible in our own power.
Joshua received this encouragement as he faced overwhelming challenges: "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest" (Joshua 1:9, KJV). This same promise applies to us today. We fight from a position of victory, not for victory, because Christ has already won the decisive battle at Calvary.
The Reward of Faithful Fighting
The Christian life of daily combat is not without its rewards. Paul, near the end of his life, could declare with confidence: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing" (2 Timothy 4:7-8, KJV).
James promises, "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him" (James 1:12, KJV). Every day we persevere, every battle we win through Christ, contributes to an eternal reward that far outweighs any temporary struggle.
Every day we fight! This is not a call to weariness but to vigilance. It is not a burden but a privilege to serve in the army of the living God. We fight knowing that victory is assured, that our Heavenly Father never loses, and that our perseverance will result in eternal glory. Let us therefore "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called" (1 Timothy 6:12, KJV).
May we embrace each new day with determination, putting on our spiritual armour, wielding the sword of the Spirit, and standing firm in the strength of the Lord. The battle is real, but so is the victory. Every day we fight, and every day we overcome through Him who loved us and gave Himself for us…
