Faith: The Currency of the Spiritual Realm!

The Eternal Investment

In our natural world, we understand the concept of currency. Whether it's pounds sterling, dollars, or yen, currency is what allows us to access goods and services within a particular economy. But have you ever considered that there's a currency for the spiritual realm? That currency is faith.

Just as you cannot purchase items in Japan with British pounds without first exchanging your money for yen, you cannot access the blessings, power, and provision of God's Kingdom without faith. This profound truth revolutionises how we approach our relationship with God and our daily walk with Him.

The Nature of Faith

The writer of Hebrews provides us with a foundational definition: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1, KJV). Faith gives substance to our hopes and makes the invisible realities of God's Kingdom tangible in our lives. It's the mechanism by which we exchange the visible for the invisible, the temporal for the eternal.

Consider how currency works in the natural realm. When you deposit money in a bank, you're trusting the banking system with something tangible in exchange for a promise—a digital record that you own that amount. Similarly, faith is our trust in God's promises, our confidence that what He declares is true, even when we cannot yet see it manifested.

Biblical Examples of Faith as Currency

Scripture is replete with examples of individuals who used faith as spiritual currency to access God's power. In Mark 5 KJV, we encounter the woman with the issue of blood who pressed through the crowd to touch Jesus' garment. Despite her condition making her ceremonially unclean, her faith drove her forward. Jesus responded, "Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague" (Mark 5:34, KJV). Her faith was the currency she used to withdraw healing from the spiritual realm into her physical body.

The centurion in Matthew 8 KJV provides another powerful illustration. When he asked Jesus to heal his servant, he demonstrated such profound understanding of spiritual authority that Jesus marvelled, saying, "Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel" (Matthew 8:10, KJV). This Roman soldier's abundant spiritual currency—his great faith—accessed healing for his servant from a distance.

Faith Must Circulate

Currency that sits idle under a mattress benefits no one and grows stale. It must circulate to be effective in an economy. Similarly, faith isn't meant to be static or theoretical. James challenges us with this reality: "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone" (James 2:17, KJV). Our faith must be in circulation—expressed through actions, declarations, and obedience—to be effective.

This doesn't mean we earn salvation through works, but rather that genuine faith naturally produces corresponding action. Faith without expression is like currency without circulation—technically present but practically useless.

Growing Your Spiritual Account

How do we increase our spiritual bank account? How do we acquire more of this faith currency? Paul provides the answer in Romans: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17, KJV). Just as you might work to earn money in the natural realm, we invest time in God's Word to increase our faith in the spiritual realm.

The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the more our faith grows. This isn't about religious ritual but about genuine engagement with the living Word of God. Prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers serve as regular deposits into our spiritual accounts. These spiritual disciplines are investment strategies for building spiritual wealth.

Beware of Spiritual Counterfeits

In the natural realm, counterfeit currency appears genuine but holds no value. Similarly, the spiritual realm has counterfeits that masquerade as faith. There's presumption—which resembles faith but is actually moving ahead of God without His direction. There's wishful thinking—based on our desires rather than God's promises. And there's intellectual assent—agreeing with truth mentally without allowing it to transform our hearts and actions.

True faith is always grounded in God's character and promises. It's not a feeling; it's a deliberate choice to trust God based on who He is, regardless of our circumstances.

The Power of Small Faith

Jesus taught an astonishing principle about faith: "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Matthew 17:20, KJV). This reveals that it's not about the quantity of our faith as much as the quality—specifically, who our faith is in. Even a small amount of genuine faith in an infinitely powerful God can accomplish the impossible.

Walking by Faith

Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians KJV, "For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7, KJV). This means we live according to the spiritual economy, not just the natural one. We make decisions based on what God says, not merely on what we can see with our natural eyes.

When facing challenges—whether health issues, financial struggles, relationship problems, or spiritual warfare—we must ask ourselves: Am I attempting to resolve this with natural currency or spiritual currency? Am I relying solely on my own resources, or am I accessing God's unlimited resources through faith?

The Value of God's Promises

Money only holds value because we collectively agree it does. A £20 note is merely paper and ink, yet we agree it has purchasing power. In a similar way, faith assigns value to God's promises. When we choose to believe God's Word over our circumstances, we're declaring that His promises have ultimate value in our lives.

Faith is indeed the currency of the spiritual realm. Just as we cannot function in a foreign economy without the proper currency, we cannot access the riches of God's Kingdom without faith. Let us be wise spiritual investors, making regular deposits through time in God's Word, exercising our faith through obedience, and spending our faith on the priorities of God's Kingdom.
