Has the Bible Been Hijacked?
Somebody Has Taken the Book Out of Your Hands
Has the Bible been hijacked by the intellectuals and the hybrid modern-day preachers? Has the Word of God been quietly lifted out of the hands of ordinary believers and locked away again behind clever men, big platforms, bright lights and long words? Look honestly at the church today. Plenty of believers can tell you the name of their favourite preacher, quote his latest catchphrase and share his latest clip — but ask them to open the Bible and show you a doctrine for themselves, and there is silence.
That is not a small thing. That is how deception has always begun. It never starts with a denial of the Word; it starts with a distance from it. Put the Book far enough out of a man's reach and he will believe whatever he is told it says.
And we need to be honest about how it happened. The Bible has not been taken from us by force. It has been handed over. Handed over for entertainment, for atmosphere, for a nice feeling on a Sunday, for teaching that costs us nothing and asks nothing of us.
Men Died So That You Could Hold It
There was a time when owning a Bible in your own language could cost you everything. Men were hunted, imprisoned, strangled and burned for the crime of translating Scripture so that the ploughboy, the labourer and the servant girl could read it for themselves. They did not suffer that so their children's children could leave the Book shut on a shelf and live off another man's opinions.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path [Psalm 119:105 KJV]. A lamp is no earthly use to the man who never picks it up. He can own it, admire it, carry it under his arm to church — and still walk in the dark.
So ask the question plainly: is history repeating itself? Do we now have to fight again to get the truth back into the hands of the people? I believe we do. Not with fists, and not with clever arguments, but with open Bibles, plain teaching, and believers who will not be talked out of what God has written.
The Counterfeit Always Sounds Close Enough
Here is what makes this so dangerous. What is being peddled as truth is not always miles away from it. It sits close. Close enough to pass. Close enough to quote a verse, use the right words, mention the right names — and still leave you holding something that is not the gospel at all.
Paul did not leave us guessing: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils [1 Timothy 4:1 KJV]. Look hard at that word — doctrines. Not obvious wickedness. Doctrine. Teaching. Something taught from a platform to people who trusted the man teaching it.
The Lord Jesus said the same about the men who carry it: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves [Matthew 7:15 KJV]. Sheep's clothing looks like the real flock. It sounds like the real flock. If false teaching turned up wearing a badge, nobody would ever be deceived by it.
And Paul told Timothy exactly how it spreads: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables [2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV]. Read that again slowly. It does not say wicked teachers forced their way in. It says the people went out and gathered the teachers they wanted. The appetite created the ministry. That is a warning to congregations, not only to pulpits.
Why Have We Put Up With It?
Because error is comfortable when it flatters us. Because we have been trained to be polite about things God calls poison. Because nobody wants to be the awkward one who asks, "where is that in the Bible?"
But that question is not rudeness — it is obedience. The Bereans were never commended for swallowing everything an apostle said; they were commended for checking it. They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so [Acts 17:11 KJV]. Readiness of mind and a daily search. Both together. Open-hearted and with an opened Bible.
John makes it a command: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world [1 John 4:1 KJV]. Try them. Test them. Weigh them. And Paul goes further than anyone would dare go today: But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed [Galatians 1:8 KJV]. If Paul himself was to be measured by the Word, then no preacher alive is above it. Not one. Not me either — measure what I teach by the Book.
A Faith That Looks Like the World Is Not Faith
Here is the fruit of all this compromise, and it is the saddest part of it. A church full of people who look exactly like the world they were saved out of. No faith. No believing. The same worries, the same fears, the same language, the same appetites, the same shrug of the shoulders when God says something plainly.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him [Hebrews 11:6 KJV]. Impossible. Not difficult, not unlikely — impossible.
Paul described exactly what is left when the Word has been emptied out of a church: Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away [2 Timothy 3:5 KJV]. A form. A shape. The outline of a church, the sound of worship, the shell of religion — and no power in it, because the Word that carries the power has been swapped for something safer.
Back to the Old Paths
The way back is not new. It is old. Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls [Jeremiah 6:16 KJV]. Stand. See. Ask. Walk. Four plain steps, with rest at the end of them.
That is what going back to basics actually means. Not a clever new movement, not another conference — the old way, the written Word, taken out of the hands of the manipulators and put back into the hands of the believer.
Take the Book back this week:
• Read the Bible yourself, daily, before you read anybody's opinion of it.
• Ask for chapter and verse on everything you are taught — including from me.
• Read the verse in its context, with the verses either side of it.
• Refuse teaching that leaves you feeling good but obeying nothing.
• Study it to be approved by God, not to win arguments — Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth [2 Timothy 2:15 KJV].
Do Not Leave This as Information
This is not a subject to have an opinion about. It is a warning to act on. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV]. And notice who gets deceived — not the wolves. Us. The hearers who never became doers.
So here is the step of obedience. 👣 Open your Bible tonight — the real thing, in your own hands — and read one chapter of the New Testament slowly, asking God to teach you from it. No podcast, no commentary, no clip. Just the Word and you. Then do it again tomorrow, and again the day after. You will be surprised how quickly the counterfeit begins to sound false to an ear that has been listening to the truth.
That is how the church gets strong again — believer by believer, chapter by chapter, until we walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work [Colossians 1:10 KJV].
The Book is not lost. It has simply been put down. Pick it up…
