Part 2 — Accepted and Righteous: Your Standing Before the Father

You do not have to earn what Christ has already given you…
Part 2 — Accepted and Righteous: Your Standing Before the Father

The Question That Haunts the Sincere

Once a person is truly born again, a quieter and more persistent question begins to surface: where do I now stand before God? It rarely gets asked out loud, but it drives a great deal of Christian anxiety. We know we are saved, and yet we live as though we are still on probation — forgiven on paper, but unsure of our welcome; working hard to keep God pleased in case He should change His mind. It is an exhausting way to live, and it is not the gospel. Scripture settles the matter with a single, steadying word: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ [Romans 5:1 KJV]. Peace, not probation. A settled relationship, not a trial period.

The word “justified” is a courtroom word. It means to be declared righteous — not merely “let off,” but pronounced to be in the right. And notice it comes by faith, not by performance. We did not argue our own case before God; Christ argued it for us and won. That is why the peace it produces is genuine peace and not wishful thinking.

No Condemnation, No Charge

The first great pillar of our standing is the removal of condemnation — and Paul states it without a shred of hesitation: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit [Romans 8:1 KJV]. Read it slowly. Not “less” condemnation. Not “no condemnation once you have made up for it.” No condemnation — full stop. The verdict upon the believer has already been passed at the cross, and it is not guilty.

That truth is tested most fiercely not in the courtroom of heaven but in the courtroom of our own conscience. The accuser's favourite work is to drag up the past and whisper, “after what you have done, God could never really accept you.” But Scripture hands the believer a ready answer: Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth [Romans 8:33 KJV]. Think about that. The only Judge whose ruling finally matters has already ruled in your favour. If God has justified you, no other voice — not the devil's, not other people's, not even your own — has the authority to overturn His verdict.

Here is where the honest believer pushes back: “but I don't feel free from condemnation. I still feel guilty.” That is an understandable feeling, but feelings do not sit as judge. Guilt that drives us to genuine repentance is the Holy Spirit's gentle work, and we should heed it. But the vague, grinding condemnation that keeps muttering “you are still not accepted” is not from God at all. The cross dealt with your condemnation once and for all. Your task is not to feel it away, but to believe what God has already declared over you.

Made Righteous and Fully Accepted

It is one thing to have the debt cleared; it is another to be given a standing — and the gospel gives us both. On the cross the greatest exchange in all history took place: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him [2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV]. Sit on that verse, for it is among the most staggering in all of Scripture. Christ, who never sinned, was treated as sin, so that we, who could never be righteous on our own, could be made the righteousness of God in Him. Your sin went to Him; His righteousness came to you. That is not a reward you slowly climb towards by good works; it is a gift credited to your account the very moment you believed.

And so we are welcomed — not on the strength of our own record, but on His: he hath made us accepted in the beloved [Ephesians 1:6 KJV]. Look carefully at where the acceptance rests: in the beloved. Not in your best week of prayer, and not against your worst day of failure — but in Christ, the Son the Father loves and delights in. That is precisely why your acceptance cannot be shaken. If it depended on your performance, it would rise and fall with every passing day. Because it depends on Christ, it stands as firm and unmovable as He does.

This changes everything about how we serve God. The believer who is unsure of his acceptance works for a welcome he already has, and eventually burns out trying to earn it. But the believer who knows he is accepted in the Beloved works from that welcome — freely, gladly, with nothing left to prove. This is who we are in Christ: justified, un-condemned, made righteous, and fully accepted by our Heavenly Father. And because that standing rests on Christ and not on us, it does not rise on our best day or fall on our worst. It is settled — and it is settled for ever…

💡
Walk it out: Name the one thing you keep trying to earn God's approval over — the performance, the habit, the record you keep hoping will finally make you acceptable. Then hand it to Him and rest in the finished work: you are already accepted in the Beloved. Learn to live from that welcome, not for it...

Key Takeaways:

  • In Christ you are justified by faith and at peace with God. [Romans 5:1 KJV]
  • There is no condemnation whatsoever for those who are in Christ Jesus. [Romans 8:1 KJV]
  • No charge against you can stand, because it is God who justifies. [Romans 8:33 KJV]
  • Through the great exchange you are made the righteousness of God. [2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV]
  • You are accepted in the Beloved, never on your own merit. [Ephesians 1:6 KJV]

Where to go from here:

If this has settled something in you, do not leave it at agreement. Take your Bible and read [Romans 8:1-4 KJV] slowly, then [Romans 8:31-34 KJV], and let God tell you plainly what He has already declared over you. Say it back to Him out loud — justified, un-condemned, made righteous, accepted in His beloved Son — and then get on with serving Him from that welcome instead of working for it.
