Part 2 — From Dead to Seated

You were dead. God made you alive. Now live like it…

Two words that change everything

Ephesians 2 begins in a graveyard.

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins [Ephesians 2:1 KJV].

Not poorly. Not struggling. Not doing your best in difficult circumstances. Dead. That is God's honest diagnosis of every one of us before Christ — spiritually dead, walking according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air [Ephesians 2:2 KJV].

And a dead person cannot improve themselves. That is the whole point. You cannot educate a corpse, motivate a corpse, or give a corpse a five-step plan. Dead people need life, not advice.

Then come the two greatest words in the chapter, maybe in the whole letter:

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) [Ephesians 2:4-5 KJV].

But God. Everything before those words is your case history. Everything after them is His mercy. And notice when He acted — even when we were dead in sins. Not when we cleaned up. Not when we started attending. While we were dead.

God did not stop at making us alive.

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus [Ephesians 2:6 KJV].

Quickened, raised, seated. Three works of God, all in the past tense, all in Christ. A believer is not waiting for a position — a believer already has one.

That is not a call to feel important. It is a call to stop living beneath your standing. Christians who know they are seated in Christ do not go begging the world for identity, status or approval. They have nothing to prove and nothing to protect.

The verse the church must never lose

Then the plainest statement of the gospel in the Bible:

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast [Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV].

Grace — God's kindness to people who could never earn it. Faith — the empty hand that receives it. And even that is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God.

Which kills boasting stone dead. No believer stands in the kingdom on the strength of their upbringing, their church, their denomination, their giving or their good record. Every single one of us is here on the same footing: mercy.

But here is where people stop reading — and it is one verse too soon.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them [Ephesians 2:10 KJV].

Read verses 8, 9 and 10 together and the balance of the Christian life is settled forever.

The order that keeps you steady:

• Not by works — you are not saved because you did good things
• Unto good works — you are saved so that you will do good things
• Already prepared — God has works waiting that He ordained you to walk in

Works are not the root of salvation. They are the fruit of it. And workmanship is a craftsman's word — God is making something of you, and He is not finished.

So if anyone tells you grace makes obedience optional, they have stopped reading at verse nine.

Far off, brought near, built together

The second half of the chapter widens out. Once we were without Christ… having no hope, and without God in the world [Ephesians 2:12 KJV].

But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ [Ephesians 2:13 KJV].

For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us [Ephesians 2:14 KJV].

A wall came down at Calvary. Jew and Gentile, insider and outsider, respectable and wrecked — all made one body under one Head. Which means every wall the church builds back up, God has already pulled down.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God [Ephesians 2:19 KJV].

Strangers become citizens. Foreigners become family. And the whole building rests on one stone: Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone [Ephesians 2:20 KJV].

What it says

Ephesians 2 in plain words: you were spiritually dead and going the way of the world. God, rich in mercy, made you alive with Christ, raised you and seated you with Him. You are saved by grace through faith — a gift, not a wage — and you are God's workmanship, created for good works He prepared in advance. The blood of Christ brought you near, pulled down the dividing wall, and made you a citizen and a member of God's household, built on Christ the corner stone.

Walk it out

Two ditches sit either side of this chapter, and most of us lean towards one of them.

The first ditch is earning. Quietly believing God likes you more on your good days. If that is you, verses 8 and 9 are your medicine — it was a gift when you received it, and it is a gift today.

The second ditch is idling. Loving grace so much that obedience becomes optional. If that is you, verse 10 is your medicine — you were created in Christ Jesus unto good works, and there are works God prepared that nobody else is placed to do.

And then there is the wall. Is there a believer you keep at arm's length — over background, class, politics, past, or something they said three years ago? Christ pulled that wall down at the cross. Rebuilding it is not conviction, it is disobedience.

One step today

Ephesians in a sentence: God did not save you for doing good — He saved you for doing good…

Do the works you were made for — starting with one.

Ask God this morning: what good work have You put in front of me today? Then do the first thing that comes to mind and is clearly right — the phone call, the visit, the apology, the money quietly given, the neighbour's shopping, the difficult conversation you have been avoiding.

One good work. Today. Not to be saved — because you already are…

Prayer: Father, I was dead and You made me alive. I could not earn it, and I cannot repay it. Thank You for mercy that came while I was still in my sins. Keep me out of the ditch of earning and the ditch of idling. Show me the good works You have prepared for me, and give me a willing heart to walk in them today. Tear down any wall I have built against another believer. In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen!
