Part 7 — Still Standing

One letter, one walk, one war — and one Lord holding you up…
Part 7 — Still Standing

Six chapters, one straight line

We have read the whole letter now, so stand back and look at the shape of it. Ephesians is not six unrelated sermons. It is one argument, running in a straight line — and once you see the line, you never read the letter the same way again.

The shape of Ephesians:
• Chapters 1–3 — the Word: what God has done, entirely on His own initiative
• Chapters 4–5 — the walk: how a believer lives because of it
• Chapter 6 — the war: how a believer stands while living it

The whole thing pivots on one word in chapter four: I therefore… beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called [Ephesians 4:1 KJV]. Get that order wrong and the Christian life becomes exhausting, because you are trying to earn what God has already given. Get it right and it becomes possible. God settles who you are first, and only then tells you how to live.

What was settled before you got involved

Go back to the beginning. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ [Ephesians 1:3 KJV]. Chosen. Accepted. Redeemed. Forgiven. Sealed with the Holy Spirit. Not one of those words describes something you achieved. Then chapter two: dead, and made alive. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us [Ephesians 2:4 KJV]. But God — two words that turn the whole letter, and the whole of a life.

And chapter three: the secret God kept for ages and then told plainly — That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel [Ephesians 3:6 KJV]. One body. No inner circle, no second-class believers, no waiting list. And with it an open door: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him [Ephesians 3:12 KJV]. That is the foundation. Nothing you do this week adds a brick to it, and nothing that happens to you this week takes one away.

What that makes of a Tuesday

But Ephesians never lets doctrine sit still. It walks it out of the door. A worthy walk turns out to be startlingly ordinary: With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love [Ephesians 4:2 KJV]. The old man off and the new man on. Truth instead of lies. Anger dealt with before sunset. Honest work, so there is something to give away. Words chosen that it may minister grace unto the hearers [Ephesians 4:29 KJV].

Then chapter five takes it home. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light [Ephesians 5:8 KJV] — a change of nature, not merely of address, and one that shows up in your evenings. Redeeming the time, because the days are evil [Ephesians 5:16 KJV] — hours bought back on purpose, because nobody drifts into a strong prayer life. A song and a thanksgiving on the inside. And the costliest command in the letter: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it [Ephesians 5:25 KJV].

And chapter six puts the kit on and stands — at the kitchen table, on the shift, on the school run. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers [Ephesians 6:12 KJV], which means the person you find hardest is not your enemy. Truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the sword of the Spirit go on — every piece of it already given to you in chapters one to three — and the goal is beautifully modest: and having done all, to stand [Ephesians 6:13 KJV]. One letter. Word, walk, war. Nothing in it is theory.

The seven sentences

Here is the whole series in seven lines — the sentence we closed each teaching with. If you have missed a part, these carry the heart of it; if you have heard them all, hearing them again is exactly how they stick. Read them slowly. Together they are Ephesians on a page.

Ephesians in seven sentences:
• Overview: This letter is not about somebody else — it is God's post, addressed to you
• Chapter 1: God blessed you before you did anything, so nothing you do today can undo it
• Chapter 2: God did not save you because of good works — He saved you for them
• Chapter 3: God kept the secret for ages and then told you — you are in the one body, with the door wide open
• Chapter 4: God has settled who you are — now walk like somebody who believes it
• Chapter 5: You are light now — so live like it at home, where nobody is watching but God
• Chapter 6: God supplies the armour and the strength — your job today is simply to be found standing

Reading is not the finish line

Now the honest bit, and it is the reason this series exists. You can finish a book of the Bible and be no different for it. Knowing Ephesians and living Ephesians are two different things, and only one of them changes a home. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV]. Deceiving your own selves. That is the danger of good teaching — the feeling of progress without any of the substance. We mistake being moved for being changed. So the aim was never to make you an expert on Ephesians. It was this: That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God [Colossians 1:10 KJV]. Walk. Fruitful. Increasing. All of it moving.

Most people finish a series like this in one of two ditches. The first is doing nothing. The teaching was enjoyable, the notes are somewhere, and by Thursday it has all gone quiet — exactly what James warns about. The second is doing everything. Seven chapters' worth of changes attempted at once, kept for nine days, then abandoned in a heap of guilt. There is a better way, and it is the one this whole letter models. God settles you first, and then you change one thing at a time, from a place of security rather than fear. So do not try to apply Ephesians. Apply one verse of it, until it is no longer a decision but a habit — and then take the next. That is how a letter written two thousand years ago changes a Tuesday.

Ephesians in plain words, from start to finish: God chose, redeemed, forgave and sealed you before you did anything for Him. He made you alive when you were dead, seated you with Christ, and put you into one body with every other believer, with full access to the Father. Because of all that — therefore — walk worthy: humbly, honestly, patiently, with a guarded tongue and a home that is better for your being in it. And because there is a real enemy, put on the whole armour of God and stand.

Ephesians in a sentence: God did everything to save you and seat you — now walk it, wear the armour, and be found standing…

💡Prayer: Father, thank You for this letter and for everything it says You have already done. Keep me from being a hearer only. Show me the one thing You want changed first, and give me the grace to keep at it until it is a habit rather than a decision. Let my walk please You, let my home be better for it, and by Your strength keep me standing to the end. In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen!
👣 Walk it out: Go back through the seven sentences and pick one — not the most impressive one, but the one that made you uncomfortable: the tongue, the grudge, the evenings, the hour you know you should buy back, the person you have been fighting instead of praying for. Write it on something you will see every day for a month. Then tell one other believer what you have chosen, and ask them to ask you about it...

Key Takeaways:

  • Ephesians runs in one straight line: the Word, the walk, the war — [Ephesians 1:3 KJV]
  • Everything God did was settled before we contributed anything — [Ephesians 2:4-5 KJV]
  • Therefore in chapter four is the pivot of the entire letter — [Ephesians 4:1 KJV]
  • A worthy walk is ordinary: humility, patience, honest speech, kindness — [Ephesians 4:2 KJV]
  • The teaching is tested at home, not on a platform — [Ephesians 5:8 KJV]
  • The goal of the armour is to be found standing — [Ephesians 6:13 KJV]
  • Hearing without doing is self-deception; change one thing at a time — [James 1:22 KJV]

Where to go from here:

Read Ephesians 1–6 through in one sitting this weekend — it takes about twenty minutes — with the seven sentences beside you, and notice where the Word turns into the walk and the walk into the war. Then take the step before the day is out: choose your one sentence, write it down, and tell one believer.
