Part 4 — Endued With Power: The Nine Manifestations of the Spirit

Saved for More Than Safety

So far we have looked at what God has made us and where He has set us. Now we turn inward, to what He has placed within us — because God did not save you merely to keep you safe until Christ return. He saved you, filled you with His Spirit, and gave you power to serve. When the Holy Spirit came to live in you at the new birth, He did not arrive empty-handed. He came with power — power to build, to bless, and to strengthen the body of Christ. The Lord Himself told the disciples not to rush ahead without it: tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high [Luke 24:49 KJV]. And that same promise reaches every believer: ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you [Acts 1:8 KJV].

That word “power” matters. The Christian life was never designed to be lived on natural ability alone. There is a supernatural dimension God intends to work through ordinary believers — and it begins not with a technique we master from the outside, but with a Spirit who lives on the inside.

Manifestations, Not Trophies

Paul has a particular word for the ways this power shows itself. He calls them the manifestation of the Spirit — and the phrase he chooses guards us from a great deal of pride and confusion: But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal [1 Corinthians 12:7 KJV]. A manifestation is simply the Spirit showing Himself through a believer. That immediately settles two things. First, the source is the Spirit, not us — so there is nothing here to boast about. Second, the purpose is to profit withal, that is, for the common good — so there is nothing to hoard or show off. These are not trophies awarded to a spiritual elite; they are the one Spirit working through ordinary people for the good of all.

Paul lists nine of them together: For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues [1 Corinthians 12:8-10 KJV].

Set out plainly, the nine manifestations are these:

The nine manifestations of the Spirit:
• Word of wisdom
• Word of knowledge
• Faith
• Gifts of healing
• Working of miracles
• Prophecy
• Discerning of spirits
• Divers kinds of tongues
• Interpretation of tongues

Notice how ordinary and how practical they are. A word of wisdom to know what to do; a word of knowledge to know what only God could reveal; faith to believe Him for the impossible; healing and miracles that display His mercy and power; prophecy to build up and encourage; discerning of spirits to tell what is truly of God and what is not; tongues and their interpretation to edify the body. Every single one of them is aimed at people — at strengthening the body of Christ, not decorating the individual believer.

One Spirit, One Purpose — and Your Part in It

Here is the truth that keeps it all humble. But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will [1 Corinthians 12:11 KJV]. Our part is not to demand, to compete, or to covet, but simply to be available and willing.

Yet availability does not mean passivity. Paul actually tells us to want these things, only for the right reason: desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy [1 Corinthians 14:1 KJV]. Desire them — yes — but always so that others are built up, never so that we are admired. That one motive keeps everything in its proper place.

This is perhaps where many believers sell themselves short. They quietly assume the power of the Spirit is for other people — the preacher, the “gifted” ones, those with a platform. But Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man. If you are born again, the Spirit who works these things lives in you. So the real question is not whether God can work through you, but whether you will make yourself available for Him to do so.

This is who we are in Christ: not passive spectators in the pew, but Spirit-empowered members of a living body, each one a channel through whom God can work for the good of others. Yet power always travels with a partner — for gifts without godly character do more harm than good. So seek the Spirit's power and the Spirit's character together, and let Him work through a life He is also shaping.

💡
Walk it out: Stop asking whether God could ever use someone like you, and start asking Him how. This week, make yourself genuinely available — pray, “Lord, work through me for someone else's good,” keep your eyes open for the person right in front of you, and step out in obedience when He prompts.,,

Key Takeaways:

  • Every born-again believer is endued with power by the indwelling Holy Spirit. [Acts 1:8 KJV]
  • The manifestations are the Spirit showing Himself, given to profit the whole body. [1 Corinthians 12:7 KJV]
  • There are nine manifestations of the one Spirit, and all are deeply practical. [1 Corinthians 12:8-10 KJV]
  • Desire the manifestations rightly — to edify others, never to impress them. [1 Corinthians 14:1 KJV]

Where to go from here:

If this has stirred something in you, do not leave it at agreement. Take your Bible and read [1 Corinthians 12:1-11 KJV] slowly, then [1 Corinthians 14:1-3 KJV], and ask God plainly to work through you for someone else's good. Then keep your eyes open this week for the person right in front of you, and step out in obedience when He prompts.
