Part 5 — The Fruit of the Spirit: The Character of Christ in You

Power Is Not the Whole Story

It is entirely possible to operate in the power of the Spirit and still be immature in the character of the Spirit — and that is exactly why character must never be left out of the picture. The manifestations show what the Spirit can do through a believer; the fruit shows who that believer is becoming. And of the two, character is the deeper work. Gifts can be exercised in a single moment; fruit takes a lifetime to ripen. We have all seen the damage done when a person is powerfully gifted yet sadly ungodly — and Scripture never allows us to separate the two. The fruit of the Spirit is nothing less than the character of Christ Himself being formed in us, and it is the truest evidence that the life within is real.

One Fruit With Nine Expressions

It is worth noticing exactly how Paul speaks of it. He does not say “fruits,” as though we might collect a favourite few and quietly leave the rest. He says fruit, singular: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law [Galatians 5:22-23 KJV]. One fruit, with nine expressions — a single ripening life that shows itself in nine ways at once. We are not free to pick and choose, majoring in love while excusing our lack of patience, or prizing joy while neglecting self-control. Where the Spirit genuinely reigns, all nine begin to grow together, like nine facets of one jewel catching the same light.

The nine expressions of the fruit:
• Love
• Joy
• Peace
• Longsuffering
• Gentleness
• Goodness
• Faith
• Meekness
• Temperance

And notice where the fruit is aimed. Nearly every expression of it is relational — love, patience, gentleness, goodness, meekness. The Spirit does not grow this fruit so that we can admire it in private, but so that it feeds and blesses the people around us. Fruit, after all, is never produced for the tree itself; it is produced for others to eat.

Fruit Grows by Abiding, Not by Striving

Here is the part we most often get wrong. We treat character like a self-improvement project — grit the teeth, try harder, resolve to be more patient by Monday morning — and we end up frustrated and defeated. But fruit simply does not grow that way. Fruit is not manufactured by effort; it is produced by connection. Jesus could not have made it plainer: I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing [John 15:5 KJV].

Think of a branch on a vine. It does not strain and sweat to produce grapes. It simply stays joined to the vine, and the life of the vine flows through it and does the rest. So it is with us. Our task is not to squeeze fruit out of ourselves by sheer willpower; it is to abide — to stay close to Christ through His Word, through prayer, and through daily obedience — and to let the Holy Spirit do the growing. The moment we grasp this, the whole pressure changes. The question is no longer “how do I force myself to be more loving?” but “am I staying close to the One whose love will fill me?”

Yet abiding is not passive drifting either. There is a daily choice in it: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh [Galatians 5:16 KJV]. Fruit ripens as we walk — step by step, choice by choice, day by day. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit [Galatians 5:25 KJV]. Some days that walk is easy; other days it is a hard, deliberate obedience against the strong pull of the flesh. But the branch that keeps walking in step with the Spirit will, in time, grow heavy with fruit. And the harvest is never for our glory but for the Father's: Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit [John 15:8 KJV].

This is who we are in Christ: branches on the true Vine, slowly but surely bearing the very character of the One we belong to. And branches like these were never meant to grow in isolation — they belong together on one Vine, bearing fruit that feeds the people God has put around them.

💡
Walk it out: Pick the one expression of the fruit you find hardest just now — perhaps longsuffering with a difficult person, or temperance in an area where you keep losing ground. Instead of gritting your teeth to produce it, draw deliberately nearer to Christ this week through His Word and prayer. Abide, keep walking in step with the Spirit, and let Him grow in you what you cannot grow in yourself...

Key Takeaways:

  • Character matters as much as power — fruit is the truest evidence of the Spirit's life. [Galatians 5:22-23 KJV]
  • It is one fruit with nine expressions, grown together, not picked selectively. [Galatians 5:22-23 KJV]
  • Fruit comes by abiding in Christ, not by human striving. [John 15:5 KJV]
  • We bear fruit as we make the daily choice to walk in the Spirit. [Galatians 5:16 KJV]
  • A fruitful life brings glory to our Heavenly Father. [John 15:8 KJV]

Where to go from here:

If this has searched you out, do not leave it at agreement. Take your Bible and read [Galatians 5:16-25 KJV] slowly, then [John 15:1-8 KJV], and ask God to grow in you what you cannot grow in yourself. Then pick the one expression of the fruit you find hardest just now and, instead of gritting your teeth, draw deliberately nearer to Christ this week through His Word and prayer.
