Part 6 — One Body, One Head: Where God Has Set You

You were saved and empowered for a place and a purpose…
Part 6 — One Body, One Head: Where God Has Set You

The Christian Life Was Never Meant to Be Private

Everything we have seen so far has been deeply personal — your new birth, your standing, your security, and the Spirit's power and fruit within you. But God never intended any of it to stay private. The moment you were born again, you were joined to something far bigger than yourself: the body of Christ. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ [1 Corinthians 12:12 KJV]. A hand or an eye means nothing on its own; it only makes sense joined to a body. And every believer, however small he may feel, is a living member of Christ's own body.

And that body has one Head — not a committee, not a celebrity, not a tradition, but Christ Himself: And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence [Colossians 1:18 KJV]. The health of any local church, and of the church at large, rises and falls on this one thing: whether Christ is truly kept as the Head. When anything or anyone else quietly takes that place, the body goes wrong. When Christ alone is honoured as Head, the body flourishes.

Father, Head, and the Power Within

Here the whole picture of this series finally draws together into one. God is our Heavenly Father, who adopted us as sons. Christ is the Head of the body, who bought us with His own blood and now leads us. And the Holy Spirit is the power within, who connects us to the Father through the Son: For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father [Ephesians 2:18 KJV]. Read that carefully, because it holds the very heart of who we are. It is the Spirit within us who gives us the access; that access runs through Christ, the Head; and it brings us home to the Father. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — and you, an ordinary believer, brought right into the middle of that fellowship.

This is why the indwelling Spirit is so precious. He is not merely power for service; He is the living connection between you and God. Through the Spirit within, the child speaks to the Father, and does so through Christ the Head. Take that away and Christianity shrinks into mere religion — rules kept at a cold distance. Keep it, and Christianity is exactly what God made it to be: a living relationship, Spirit-connected, Christ-mediated, and Father-centred.

God Has Set You — So Find Your Place

Because all of this is true, no believer is an accident in the body, and no believer is optional. But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him [1 Corinthians 12:18 KJV]. God placed you — your temperament, your history, your gifts, and even your weaknesses — exactly where it pleased Him to set you. You are not a spare part. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular [1 Corinthians 12:27 KJV]. There are no useless members and no wasted lives in the body of Christ.

And Christ, the Head, equips the body with everything it needs by giving it ministries: And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ [Ephesians 4:11-12 KJV]. Notice the purpose stated in that last line: it is all for the edifying of the body — the building up of one another. This completely reframes how we think about calling. Your calling is not first about a title, a platform, or a position; it is about building others up under the Headship of Christ, in the very place He has set you.

So the honest question for every believer is not “am I important enough to have a part?” but “have I taken up the part God has already given me?” Too many sit in the pew waiting to be impressive when God is simply asking them to be faithful — to serve, to strengthen, and to build up the members around them. Ask Him where He has set you. Look honestly at the gifts and the burdens He has given you. Then serve there wholeheartedly, as unto the Head.

This is who we are in Christ: living members of one body, under one Head, connected to the Father by one Spirit, each with a real part to play. And a body that knows its Head and its place is ready for the thing that matters most — to stand firm and to live it all out, right where He has set us.

💡
Walk it out: Ask the Head of the body one honest question this week: “Lord, where have You set me, and whom can I build up?” Then take a single, concrete step to serve there — not for a title, not to be noticed, but for the good of the body and the glory of its Head...

Key Takeaways:

  • Every believer is saved into the one body of Christ, never meant to live alone. [1 Corinthians 12:12 KJV]
  • Christ alone is the Head of the church, with the preeminence in all things. [Colossians 1:18 KJV]
  • The Spirit within gives us access to the Father through Christ the Head. [Ephesians 2:18 KJV]
  • God has set you in the body deliberately — you are not optional. [1 Corinthians 12:18 KJV]
  • Your calling is to build up the body in the place God has set you. [Ephesians 4:11-12 KJV]

Where to go from here:

If this has found you sitting on the sidelines, do not leave it at agreement. Take your Bible and read [1 Corinthians 12:12-27 KJV] slowly, then [Ephesians 4:11-16 KJV], and ask the Head of the body one honest question: where have You set me, and whom can I build up? Then take a single, concrete step to serve there this week.
