Part 6 — Dressed for the Fight
Home and work before the battlefield
Most teaching on Ephesians 6 starts at verse 10. Paul does not. Before he says a single word about armour or spiritual warfare, he talks about children, parents, workers and bosses. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right [Ephesians 6:1 KJV]. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord [Ephesians 6:4 KJV]. That second one is worth sitting with. Fathers are not told to control their children; they are told not to exasperate them, and to raise them in the Lord. Constant criticism, moving goalposts and promises never kept provoke a child to wrath faster than anything.
Then Paul turns to work. Servants are told to obey not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men [Ephesians 6:5-7 KJV]. Not with eyeservice — not just working hard while the manager is watching. The Christian works the same when nobody is looking, because the real employer never blinks. And here is why the order matters: the armour comes after the home and the workplace. The battle is not fought somewhere exotic. It is fought on the school run, at the kitchen table and on a Monday shift.
Be strong in the Lord, and know who you are fighting
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might [Ephesians 6:10 KJV]. Not be strong, but be strong in the Lord. Every ounce of strength on offer here is borrowed, and that is a relief, not an insult — nobody is asking you to be tougher than you are. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil [Ephesians 6:11 KJV]. Wiles are not brute force; they are schemes, tricks and angles. The enemy rarely comes at a believer head-on. He comes through discouragement, through a half-truth, through the thing you are too tired to resist at eleven o'clock at night. And notice that it is the whole armour of God. Not your armour. God supplies it — but you put it on.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places [Ephesians 6:12 KJV]. This verse would save the church a great deal of grief if we believed it. The difficult person at work is not your enemy. The relative who will not speak to you is not your enemy. The believer who disagrees with you in the church car park is not your enemy. There is a real adversary, and it is not made of flesh and blood — yet most Christians spend their energy fighting people and leave the real enemy entirely undisturbed.
Dressed, and standing
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand [Ephesians 6:13 KJV]. Notice the goal. Not to advance, conquer or perform, but to stand. Sometimes the most spiritual thing a believer does all year is still be standing in December.
The whole armour — and what each piece does:
• Loins girt about with truth — everything else is held together by honesty with God and with yourself [Ephesians 6:14 KJV]
• Breastplate of righteousness — your standing as righteous in Christ guards the heart from accusation [Ephesians 6:14 KJV]
• Feet shod with the gospel of peace — sure footing; you go into the day at peace with God [Ephesians 6:15 KJV]
• Shield of faith — able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked; faith stops the thought before it lands [Ephesians 6:16 KJV]
• Helmet of salvation — the mind protected by the settled certainty of being saved [Ephesians 6:17 KJV]
• Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God — the only offensive piece, and useless if left in its sheath [Ephesians 6:17 KJV]
Every defensive piece is something God has already given you in Christ. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith and salvation are all laid out in the first three chapters of this very letter, so the armour is not extra equipment — it is the doctrine of Ephesians, worn. And the one weapon is the Word, which means a believer who does not read is a soldier carrying an empty scabbard.
Praying always, and standing well
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints [Ephesians 6:18 KJV]. This is not a seventh piece of armour. It is the air the soldier breathes, and armour with no prayer is a dressed-up believer standing alone. Look who Paul asks prayer for — himself, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly [Ephesians 6:19 KJV]. The man who wrote this letter asked ordinary Christians to pray for his courage. Nobody outgrows the need.
There are two common ditches on either side of this road. The first is seeing a devil behind every inconvenience. Some days you are not under attack — you are just tired, or you have made a poor decision, or the car needed a new part, and not everything is warfare. The second is pretending there is no enemy at all. That is the more common error in comfortable Christianity, and it leaves believers baffled when discouragement lands out of nowhere. The answer to both is the same: get dressed and stand. Do not go hunting for battles, and do not go out undressed. And be honest about which piece you have left off. For most of us it is the sword — not because we doubt the Bible, but because we have not opened it this week.
Ephesians 6 in plain words: start at home and at work — children obeying, fathers not provoking, workers serving as unto the Lord. Then be strong in the Lord and put on the whole armour of God, because the real fight is not against people but against spiritual powers. Truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the Word of God are the kit, and the aim is simply to stand. All of it is held together by praying always, for yourself and for all the saints.
Ephesians 6 in a sentence: God supplies the armour and the strength — your job today is simply to be found standing…
Key Takeaways:
- The armour follows the home and workplace — that is where it gets worn — [Ephesians 6:1-7 KJV]
- Fathers are told not to provoke, but to nurture in the Lord — [Ephesians 6:4 KJV]
- Strength is borrowed: be strong in the Lord, not in yourself — [Ephesians 6:10 KJV]
- The enemy uses wiles, not brute force, so the whole armour is needed — [Ephesians 6:11 KJV]
- People are not the enemy; the real conflict is spiritual — [Ephesians 6:12 KJV]
- The goal is not conquest but standing when the evil day comes — [Ephesians 6:13 KJV]
- The Word is the only offensive weapon, and prayer holds it all together — [Ephesians 6:17-18 KJV]
Where to go from here:
Read Ephesians 6:1-20 through in one sitting this weekend, slowly, and ask where it touches your home, your work and the fight you are in right now. Then take the step before the day is out: pray for the person by name, put the real battle before God, and give ten minutes to the Word.
