Proof of Concept!
The proof of concept
There's a phrase used in engineering and business circles — proof of concept. It means you've built something small that proves the bigger idea works. The drawing on the paper, the words in the document, the plan in the head — none of it counts as proven until somebody, somewhere, takes the idea out of theory and into the real world.
Now stop and think about that for a moment.
The Bible has been the concept since the foundation of the world. The plan of God, written down, preserved, and delivered to us in the King James Bible — sixty-six books, one Author, one Saviour, one finished work. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness [2 Timothy 3:16 KJV]. The concept is sound. The doctrine is settled. The promises are sure.
So where's the proof?
The proof was never meant to sit on a shelf. The proof was never meant to live in a notebook. The proof was never meant to be left in a sermon you nodded at on Sunday and forgot by Monday morning. The proof is you.
Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart [2 Corinthians 3:2–3 KJV].
Paul didn't say the saints carry the letter. He said they are the letter. The world doesn't read the Bible first — they read you. They read your patience in the queue. They read your tongue when somebody cuts you off in traffic. They read your marriage. They read your money. They read your reaction when the news breaks bad and the bills come in heavy.
That's the proof of concept.
The concept without the proof
We've all met people who can quote chapter and verse and yet can't be lived with. They've memorised the manual and never built the thing. They've got the blueprint open on the table and the house never got past the foundations.
James was blunt about that kind of believer: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV].
Hearing is not the proof. Agreeing is not the proof. Even believing the doctrine is not the proof on its own — the devils also believe, and tremble [James 2:19 KJV], and they don't get saved by it. The proof is what walks out of you on a wet Tuesday morning when nobody's watching.
If the Bible is the concept, the believer is the proof. And a concept with no proof is just an idea somebody once had.
What the proof actually looks like
We don't need to guess what the proof looks like — Scripture spells it out plainly. That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God [Colossians 1:10 KJV].
Walk worthy. Unto all pleasing. Fruitful. Increasing.
That's the proof of concept in four moves:
- Walk worthy — your daily life lines up with the Lord you say you serve.
- Unto all pleasing — you're not living for the applause of men; you're living to please Him.
- Fruitful in every good work — something useful comes out of you, not just words.
- Increasing in the knowledge of God — you're not stuck spiritually where you were five years ago.
If those four are missing, we've got a concept on the page and no proof in the post. We've got theology and no testimony. We've got Bible study and no Bible life.
Living epistles in a watching world
Here's the sober part.
The world is not waiting to be impressed by another church poster. They are not waiting for another viral verse on a coffee mug. They are waiting for somebody who actually lives this thing. They are waiting for an epistle they can read with their own eyes.
That neighbour who never darkens a church door — they are reading you.
That family member who rolls their eyes when you mention the Lord — they are reading you.
That work colleague who knows you carry a Bible — they are reading you.
You are the version of the gospel they are most likely to meet this week. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid [Matthew 5:14 KJV].
A light isn't a concept. A light shines or it doesn't. A city on a hill is either visible or it isn't. There's no halfway proof.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it — Christianity is practical, or it's nothing at all. The Word of God was never given to be admired from a distance. It was given to be obeyed, lived, walked, worked out in shoes and clothes and conversations.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them [Ephesians 2:10 KJV].
He ordained the works before you were saved. Your job is to walk in them now that you are. That's the proof.
So here's the question to carry with you today: if somebody followed you around for a week with the Bible open in their hand, would your life prove the concept — or contradict it?
The concept is settled. The Book is finished. The Saviour is risen. The Spirit is given.
The only thing missing… is the proof.
And that proof is you…
Key Takeaways:
- The Bible is the concept — settled, finished, and sure — [2 Timothy 3:16 KJV]
- The believer is the proof — living epistles, read of all men — [2 Corinthians 3:2–3 KJV]
- Hearing is not the proof; doing is — [James 1:22 KJV]
- Walking worthy is the daily evidence of the concept — [Colossians 1:10 KJV]
- The world reads your life before they read the Book — [Matthew 5:14 KJV]
- We were created in Christ Jesus unto good works — [Ephesians 2:10 KJV]
Where to go from here:
Read 2 Corinthians 3 and Colossians 1 slowly this week, with a pen in your hand. One is what you are; the other is what that looks like on an ordinary day. Then take the question the teaching leaves you with and answer it honestly before the Lord.
