Street Evangelism: Does It Work?

A Fair Question

It is a fair question, and an honest one. You stand on a cold high street with a handful of tracts, your voice trembling a little, while shoppers stream past with their eyes fixed on their phones. One or two glance up. Most do not. And somewhere in the back of your mind a quiet doubt whispers: does any of this actually work?

Let us go back to basics and answer it properly — not with hype, and not with discouragement, but with Scripture.

Jesus preached in the open, and the apostles followed

Start with the Lord Himself. Jesus did not confine His teaching to the synagogue. He preached on hillsides, by the sea, in the streets and at the city gates. He went to where the people were. And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom [Matthew 9:35 KJV]. The Word was carried into the open air, into the marketplaces of ordinary life. If the Son of God preached publicly to crowds who would later cry "crucify him," then open-air preaching is not beneath the gospel — it is part of its very pattern.

And Pentecost did not happen behind closed doors either. Peter stood up in the middle of Jerusalem, in the open, before a mocking crowd, and preached Christ crucified and risen. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them... [Acts 2:14 KJV]. And what happened? Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls [Acts 2:41 KJV]. Paul did the same. In Athens he reasoned in the market daily with them that met with him [Acts 17:17 KJV]. Some mocked. Some delayed. But some believed. That is street evangelism — and it is woven right through the book of Acts.

But "does it work?"

Here is where we must be careful, because the question hides an assumption. When we ask "does it work?" we usually mean "do I see results? Do people pray a prayer on the spot? Do the numbers come in?" But that is not how Scripture measures faithfulness. Think of the parable of the sower. The same seed falls on the path, the rocky ground, the thorns, and the good soil [Matthew 13:3-8 KJV]. The sower is not faulted for the soil. His job is to sow. The harvest is God's business. Street evangelism is sowing. You may scatter seed today that someone else waters years from now, and that God brings to life long after you have forgotten the cold morning you stood there.

Paul puts it plainly: I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase [1 Corinthians 3:6-7 KJV]. Read that slowly. The planter is not the saviour. The waterer is not the saviour. God gives the increase. So when we ask whether street evangelism works, we are often asking the wrong question altogether. The increase was never in our hands to begin with. That should take the pressure off and put the courage in. You are not responsible for the harvest. You are responsible to sow.

The Word will not return void

Here is the great promise that should send every nervous evangelist back onto the street with confidence: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it [Isaiah 55:11 KJV]. Void means empty. God's Word never comes back empty-handed. The tract that gets screwed up and thrown in the bin still carried truth past a person's eyes. The verse half-heard over the traffic still lodged in a soul. You do not always see what the Word is doing — but it is never doing nothing.

So does street evangelism work? Yes — but not by the world's scoreboard. If "working" means instant crowds and visible conversions every time, then no — and neither did much of the preaching in the Bible. If "working" means faithfully sowing the imperishable seed of God's Word, trusting Him for an increase you may never see this side of heaven, then it works exactly as God designed it to. The street evangelist's job is not to count heads. It is to be faithful with the Word, kind to the scornful, patient with the indifferent, and bold for the gospel. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only [James 1:22 KJV]. So do not measure your morning on the high street by how many stopped. Measure it by whether the seed went out. It did. And God will see to the rest.
