Repelling the Fiery Darts of the Wicked!
Recognising the Enemy's Tactics
For those called to serve on the front lines of God's army, the battle is relentless. As fully armoured sons of God, we face constant attacks from the enemy, who seeks to undermine our faith and derail our divine calling within the body of Christ. The Apostle Paul warns us in Ephesians, "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked" (Ephesians 6:16 KJV). This powerful imagery reminds us that spiritual warfare is not merely theoretical—it is an active, ongoing assault that requires constant vigilance and unwavering faith.
The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
Scripture makes it abundantly clear that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12 KJV). The enemy's attacks come in various forms—doubt, discouragement, temptation, accusation, and distraction. These fiery darts are designed to pierce our defences and cause us to falter in our calling.
Peter warns us, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8 KJV). The devil is strategic and intentional, particularly targeting those who are actively advancing God's kingdom. When you step out in faith to fulfil your calling, you become a threat to the enemy's plans, and therefore a primary target for his attacks.
The Full Armour of God
To withstand these relentless assaults, God has provided us with complete spiritual armour. Paul describes this in Ephesians, "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:13-17 KJV).
Each piece of armour serves a specific purpose. The belt of truth keeps us grounded in God's Word. The breastplate of righteousness protects our hearts and vital organs—our emotions and will. The shoes of the gospel give us firm footing and readiness to advance. The helmet of salvation guards our minds from the enemy's lies. And the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—is our offensive weapon.
However, notice that the shield of faith is described as being able to quench "all" the fiery darts. This is our primary defence against the enemy's attacks. Faith is not passive; it is active trust in God's promises and power, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
Standing Firm in Your Calling
Those who serve on the front lines of God's army must understand that attacks are not evidence of failure—they are evidence of effectiveness. When you are faithfully carrying out the calling God has placed upon you, the enemy will attempt to discourage, distract, and defeat you. Jesus himself faced intense spiritual warfare, particularly before beginning his public ministry (Matthew 4:1-11, KJV).
The key to withstanding these attacks is found in James 4:7: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7 KJV). Submission to God comes first—acknowledging our dependence on His strength rather than our own. Then, from that position of surrender, we can effectively resist the enemy.
Paul encourages us with these words: "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us" (Romans 8:37 KJV). Our victory is not uncertain—it is already secured through Christ. The enemy may launch fiery darts, but they cannot overcome those who stand firm in faith.
The Power of Prayer & the Word
Prayer is essential for those on the front lines. Paul concludes his teaching on spiritual armour by saying, "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints" (Ephesians 6:18 KJV). Prayer keeps us connected to our heavenly father and allows us to tap into divine power that far exceeds our own.
The Word of God is equally vital. Jesus demonstrated this when tempted by Satan in the wilderness—each temptation was answered with Scripture (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10, KJV). When we know God's Word and hide it in our hearts, we have a ready defence against the enemy's lies and accusations. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Psalm 119:11 KJV).
The Body of Christ: Fighting Together
It is crucial to remember that we are not fighting alone. God has placed us within the body of Christ for mutual support and encouragement. "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2 KJV). When one member suffers under attack, the whole body should rally to support them.
Hebrews reminds us, "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching" (Hebrews 10:24-25 KJV). Fellowship with other believers provides accountability, encouragement, and strength for the battle.
The Victory is Assured
Whilst the attacks may be relentless, our victory is certain. John writes, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4 KJV). Our faith in Christ—not our own strength or wisdom—is what enables us to stand firm and overcome.
Moreover, we have this promise: "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it" (1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV). God knows our limits and will not allow us to be overwhelmed beyond what we can endure with His help.
Press On
To those serving on the front lines of God's army—press on. The attacks you face are evidence that you are making an impact for the kingdom. Stand firm in your calling, fully armoured and trusting in God's strength. Remember Paul's words: "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV).
The fiery darts of the wicked may come, but with the shield of faith raised high and the full armour of God in place, we can quench every one. The victory is already won through Christ Jesus. Stand firm, soldier of Christ, and fulfil the calling God has placed upon your life within His glorious body, the Church…
