Welcome back to The Christian Compass — your Saturday round-up of everything we've taught this week, gathered into one place. And after a fortnight away, it has been good to be back at it. One thread has run through every day: the church has no foundation, no voice and no strength of its own — it stands or falls on the Word of God, and so do you.
We've walked it out day by day — on Tuesday, the church's voice is the Word of God; on Wednesday, what the New Testament actually says about how to run a church; on Thursday, the sobering warning that churches will fall when the foundation is anything but the Rock; and on Friday, Part 8 of our Christian Man series — the man who stands. Itching Ears & Empty Plates
Why so much Christian content leaves you feeling better but no stronger…
Something has gone quietly wrong in a great deal of Christian content today, and most people cannot put their finger on why. They watch, they nod, they feel a little lighter for half an hour — and then Monday comes and nothing has changed. Nothing has been built. Because what they were fed was not the Word of God. It was comfort dressed up as teaching — a counselling session with a verse pinned on the end like a bow on an empty box.
Scroll through the "Christian" videos on offer and count how many are actually opening the Scriptures, and how many are simply managing your feelings. There is a place for comfort; the Holy Spirit Himself is called the Comforter. But comfort was never meant to replace instruction. Somewhere along the line teaching the truth got swapped for soothing the natural man, and a generation of believers is being kept in the nursery when it ought to be marching on into maturity. Paul saw it coming: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables [2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV]. Notice who does the gathering — the people. They go shopping for a voice that will scratch the itch, and there is never a shortage of voices willing to be hired for the scratching.
Here is the plain truth: weak believers will feed on weak content, and weak content will keep them weak. It is a closed circle. If all you are ever given is milk, you never grow the teeth to chew anything solid. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil [Hebrews 5:13-14 KJV]. Milk has its season — Paul fed the Corinthians milk for hitherto ye were not able to bear it [1 Corinthians 3:2 KJV] — but it was always meant to be a stage, not a lifestyle. A church raised on nothing but feelings will be a church that cannot stand: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine [Ephesians 4:14 KJV]. Babies get blown about. Grown sons and daughters stand firm.
And much of what passes for teaching is not spiritual at all — it is soulful. It appeals to the mind, the emotions, the natural appetite for reassurance. It makes you feel understood without ever making you obey. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned [1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV]. You cannot build spiritual strength on natural food. You can pad half an hour with warm stories and gentle music, but if the truth of God's Word is not in it, the plate goes down full and comes up empty.
Good teaching does not ask, "How can I make you feel better about yourself?" It asks, "Do you know who you are in Christ, and are you living like it?" Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new [2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV]. That is not a self-help slogan; that is your identity — and identity demands a walk to match it. Paul's charge to teachers has not changed either: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine [2 Timothy 4:2 KJV]. Reprove. Rebuke. Exhort. Those words have almost vanished from modern Christian content, and their absence is telling — teaching that never challenges you will never change you.
So the question is the same for those who make content and those who take it in. Are we settling for what feels good, or are we hungry for what makes us grow? And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind [Romans 12:2 KJV]. Transformation, not therapy. Truth, not filler. The Word, not the noise. Because God is not asking us to feel better — He is asking us to walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work [Colossians 1:10 KJV]. And you cannot bear fruit on a diet of empty plates…

📖 Read 👉 The Church's Voice is the Word of God
The world is full of confident voices, and into all that noise the church is meant to speak — but with whose voice? The church has no voice of its own. We are messengers, not authors, and when we open our mouths we either speak the Word of God or we have nothing worth saying. Swap Scripture for opinion and we become one more voice in a crowded room, and a powerless one at that, because the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword [Hebrews 4:12 KJV]. Faith comes by hearing the Word, not by human cleverness; we are not free to add to it or take from it; and we must preach it in season and out, never chasing itching ears. And the voice is proved by the walk — say what God says, then do what God says, and the church still has the power to change everything…

📖 Read 👉 How to Run a Church!
Ask ten people how to run a church and you will get ten different answers — programmes, buildings, budgets, the latest business model. But the New Testament never leaves us guessing. First settle who owns it: upon this rock I will build my church [Matthew 16:18 KJV] — He builds it, He heads it, and the moment a church runs on human ambition instead of Christ's headship it becomes a religious club. Then build on the Word as the only sure foundation, lead as shepherds who feed and serve rather than lord it over the flock, put every member to work in the body, and stay steadfast in doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers. Keep order and love together, keep the church on its knees, and aim at maturity rather than numbers. Run the church God's way and it will do God's work…

Jesus told us exactly how it ends — two builders, two houses, one storm. One house stood, one house fell, and the difference was never the size of the building but the foundation underneath it. The rock is Christ and His Word; the sand is everything else — celebrity leaders, entertainment-driven services, selective preaching, false doctrine, a watered-down Bible. And here is the sobering part: a church built on sand can still look impressive, full and busy, and still be falling. So test the foundation, not the lights or the sound or the personality at the front. Is Christ the Head? Is the Word the final authority? Is the whole counsel of God preached — love and holiness, grace and judgement? Build on the Rock and stand; build on sand and fall — and great was the fall of it [Matthew 7:27 KJV]. There is no middle ground…

This is where our Christian Man series lands, and the final mark is not attack, not advance, not win — it is stand. And not in your own strength: be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might [Ephesians 6:10 KJV]. The whole armour of God is a daily uniform, not an emergency kit, and its purpose is that having done all you are still upright when the evil day lands — the day temptation comes back stronger, a child rebels, grief hits like a wall, prayer feels like talking to the ceiling. On days like that God is not asking you to be brilliant; He is asking you to still be there at sundown, still holding the shield. For most men the danger is not falling but fading — thinner prayers, a dustier Bible, a quieter conscience — so let us not be weary in well doing [Galatians 6:9 KJV]. You don't have to win every battle today. You just have to stand one more day, and the God who is able to keep you from falling will bring you through to the end…

This Week's Walk-It-Out Challenge
One thread has run through everything this week: the church stands or falls on the Word of God — and so do you. It is not enough to agree with that. It has to be spoken, ordered, tested and stood upon. So here are four small, doable challenges, one for each day we've taught. Don't try to swallow them whole. Take one, start today, and let obedience become a habit…
- Tuesday: Speak God's Word to somebody this week rather than your own advice — share one verse, plainly, with one person who needs it.
- Wednesday: Take one of the four basics — doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer — and strengthen it in your own church life this week.
- Thursday: Test the foundation, not the furniture — ask honestly whether Christ is Head and the Word is the final authority where you worship, and pray for your church by name.
- Friday: Pick the one thing you are most tempted to quit on, and decide before God that you will stand one more day — then do the same tomorrow.
You'll not manage any of this in your own strength, and you were never meant to. Lean on the Holy Spirit, take it one step at a time, and let this week's Word become this week's walk. Having done all, to stand [Ephesians 6:13 KJV].

A Personal Note — It's Good to Be Back…
A word from the two of us at the end of our first week back…
One week back in and we can say it plainly: it is good to be back, and the break did us good.
We won't pretend otherwise — we were tired. Not tired of the work, and certainly not tired of the Word, but tired in ourselves. And the Lord has never treated that as a failing. He said it to His own men when the work was at its busiest: Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while [Mark 6:31 KJV]. So we stopped for a fortnight, and we are glad we did.
What the rest gave us was not just sleep. It gave us time to read without a deadline on it, time to pray without a list, and time to sit with Elaine over a cup of coffee and talk about where this ministry is going. Some of what you'll read over the coming weeks was settled in those quiet days — including the new Friday series that starts next week.
And we came back with something we hadn't had for a while: appetite. Writing this week's teachings has been a joy rather than a job, and that shows up on the page whether we say so or not.
So if you are running on empty this morning — still turning up, still serving, still doing the right things, but running on fumes — take this as your permission from Scripture rather than from us. Rest is not laziness; it is how you last. A tired man teaches tired. A rested one still has something left to give.

Faithful When Nobody's Watching!
The unseen work in the local church is the work God is counting…
Somebody unlocked the building before you arrived on Sunday. Somebody put the heating on. Somebody prayed for that service on Friday night while the rest of us were watching telly. Somebody washed the cups, drove the elderly couple in, and quietly slipped money into an envelope for a family who were struggling. Nobody clapped. Nobody posted about it. Most of the church never even knew it happened. God knew.
There is a kind of Christian service that gets noticed, thanked and photographed — and there is a kind that never does. The second sort is where most real discipleship happens, and it is the sort that reveals what you actually believe about God. Because when nobody is watching you are not performing for people any more; you are serving the Lord, or you are not serving at all. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful [1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV]. Not found impressive. Not found popular. Found faithful.
We want God to trust us with something big. God starts by watching what we do with something small. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much [Luke 16:10 KJV]. Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways. Faithfulness in little things is not preparation for the real thing — it is the real thing, only smaller. And unfaithfulness in little things is not a minor slip; it is the same heart that will let you down when the stakes are higher. So the question is never "when will God use me?" but "what has God already put in front of me, and am I doing it properly?" The rota you signed up for. The promise you made to pray. The message you said you would send. The tidy-up nobody asked you to help with. God is not withholding a great work from you because you lack talent; often He is simply waiting to see what you do with a small one.
Here is the shift that changes everything — change who you are working for. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ [Colossians 3:23-24 KJV]. Paul says the same to servants who had every excuse to cut corners: not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart [Ephesians 6:6 KJV]. Eyeservice — what a word. Work that improves the moment somebody important walks into the room. The Lord Jesus went further and made secrecy a virtue: let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly [Matthew 6:3-4 KJV]. There is no such thing as unseen service. There is only service seen by God rather than by people — and if you need the audience, you have already had your reward [Matthew 6:1 KJV].
Let us be honest about the hard part. Hidden work gets tiring, especially when it is taken for granted, and especially when those who do less get thanked more. Scripture does not pretend otherwise; it simply tells you not to quit. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not [Galatians 6:9 KJV] — in due season, God's diary, not yours. And nothing goes missing: For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name [Hebrews 6:10 KJV]. He does not lose paperwork. He does not overlook the quiet ones. Years of unnoticed faithfulness are all on record with Him, so be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord [1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV].
One day the hidden things will be said out loud, and the commendation is not "well done, thou successful servant" or "thou popular servant." It is this: Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things [Matthew 25:21 KJV]. Faithful over a few things — that is the standard, and it is beautifully within reach of every believer, whatever your gifting or your diary looks like. Fruit grows quietly, mostly in the dark, and it feeds people who never saw it forming. So stop waiting to be noticed. Start being faithful. And do not merely agree with this — be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only [James 1:22 KJV].
