Why Trust the Bible? Part 1:

The Historical Reliability Question?

For those approaching Christianity from the outside, questions about the Bible's reliability and the existence of multiple versions are both fair and important. Let me offer some thoughts that might help those of you with questions about the Bible as you navigate these waters.

The Bible stands as one of the most historically attested ancient documents in existence. With over 5,800 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament alone, its textual reliability far exceeds other ancient works like Homer's Iliad (643 manuscripts) or Plato's writings (7 manuscripts). Remarkably, these manuscripts show 99.5% agreement in content.

Archaeological discoveries consistently confirm biblical accounts rather than contradict them. From the Pool of Siloam to Pontius Pilate's inscription, physical evidence continues to validate biblical narratives.

"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." (Isaiah 40:8 KJV)

The Translation Question

The variety of Bible translations doesn't indicate unreliability but rather reflects different translation philosophies. The original texts were written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Modern versions stem from essentially the same source manuscripts but differ in how literally they translate the text.

The King James Version (1611) represents a word-for-word approach other versions or translations aren't "updates" changing meaning, but attempts to communicate the same message accurately in contemporary language.

"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Matthew 24:35 KJV)

The Internal Coherence Question

Despite being written over 1,500 years by approximately 40 authors from diverse backgrounds—kings, fishermen, tax collectors, physicians—the Bible presents a remarkably consistent message. This internal coherence suggests something beyond mere human authorship.

"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." (2 Peter 1:21 KJV)

The Personal Experience Question

Perhaps the most compelling evidence for many believers is how the Bible's teachings transform lives when applied. This subjective element shouldn't be dismissed, as millions throughout history have testified to the Bible's power to change hearts and lives.

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12 KJV)

A Suggestion for Exploration

Rather than approaching the Bible as merely an ancient text to be academically verified, consider reading it as it claims to be—God's communication to humanity. Perhaps start with the Gospel of John, asking not just "Is this historically accurate?" but "If this is true, what would it mean for my life?"

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32 KJV)

The question of the Bible's reliability ultimately leads to a more profound question: Who is Jesus Christ? If the biblical account of His life, death, and resurrection is true, then everything changes. Your journey of discovery might start with historical investigation, but it needn't end there…

It Is Written: Standing Firm on God's Unchangeable Word!

Grounding Eternal Truth in a Shifting World…

Anchoring Faith in an Age of Shifting Truth!

In a world where truth is increasingly subjective, "It Is Written: Standing Firm on God's Unchangeable Word" offers a compelling reminder of the enduring power of Scripture. This message explores how Jesus and biblical figures anchored themselves to God's written Word when facing challenges. Rather than adapting truth to cultural preferences, we're called to faithfully proclaim God's unchanging message with both conviction and compassion. While biblical truth will inevitably divide audiences—some embracing it while others reject it—our role isn't to water down the gospel but to represent Christ faithfully as His ambassadors. Through practical insights on studying Scripture, communicating graciously, preparing for opposition, and trusting God with results, this teaching equips believers to stand confidently on the foundation that never shifts: "It is written."

God's Provision & Biblical Truth!

Unlocking the Truth About God's Provision!

Dispelling Myths & Embracing Biblical Promises…

God's love and provision shine through Scripture, countering the misguided teaching that He deliberately keeps His chosen ones from prosperity. The Bible reveals our Heavenly Father as one who delights in providing for His children, as Jesus taught in Matthew 7:11 KJV. While prosperity isn't guaranteed, God promises to meet our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19 KJV).

This teaching explores how material wellbeing and spiritual health can coexist harmoniously, as expressed in 3 John 1:2 KJV. We examine why financial struggles aren't necessarily signs of God's disfavour, but may represent times of testing, opportunities for character development, or economic circumstances beyond our control.

As New Covenant believers, we relate to God through grace rather than law, with direct access through Christ. This transformative relationship positions us as new creatures in Christ, operating under the Holy Spirit's guidance rather than Old Testament constraints. Through Biblical truth, we discover God's heart as a generous provider who invites us to seek His kingdom first, trusting that He will add all things necessary for our well-being…

Back to Basics: Obedience vs. Rebellion!

Choosing God's Path Over Our Own: The Life-Changing Power of Obedience!

Understanding the Heart of Christian Discipleship!

The eternal battle between obedience and rebellion shapes our Christian walk daily. This teaching explores how trusting God completely—rather than leaning on our understanding—transforms our relationship with Him. Through Biblical examples from Adam and Eve to the Israelites, we discover that rebellion often begins subtly as self-reliance. Yet when we choose obedience, we experience divine blessing, deeper intimacy with God, and lasting peace. This fundamental aspect of Christian living isn't a one-time decision but a daily commitment to acknowledge God in all our ways. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, pray for a willing spirit, practice immediate obedience, and surround ourselves with faithful believers, we discover that God's path for us "is far better than anything we could ever imagine." In surrendering our will to His, we find not restriction, but true freedom…

NEWS! Updates and announcements about Back to Basics: Christian living, including content changes, newsletters, website updates, and valuable information for our audience…

The Digital Battlefield!

In the ever-expanding digital landscape, ministries like Back to Basics: Christian Living find themselves engaged in what can only be described as a spiritual battle for attention, truth, and discipleship. As we've ventured deeper into YouTube, Facebook, X, Instagram, Threads & TikTok, we've witnessed both the tremendous potential and significant challenges of digital ministry in 2025.

The digital world offers unprecedented opportunities to share God's Word. Our teachings now reach individuals across continents who would never have physically entered our church doors. A simple message about God's provision or biblical truth can be viewed thousands of times, planting seeds in hearts we'll never meet this side of eternity. The analytics tell us that people are hungry for authentic, Scripture-based content that addresses real-life struggles with biblical solutions.

Yet for every victory, there are sobering realities about the digital ministry landscape. The algorithms that determine content visibility often favour controversy over truth, entertainment over substance, and brevity over depth. Our most scripturally rich teachings frequently receive fewer engagements than shorter, more visually appealing content. The "like, share, subscribe" plea has become a necessary part of our vocabulary, not from a desire for recognition, but from understanding that engagement metrics directly impact how many souls our message reaches.

We've learned valuable lessons about digital ministry effectiveness. Content that connects biblical principles to contemporary challenges resonates most deeply. Our "What's on my Heart?" The Wednesday series attracts consistent viewership because it bridges timeless truths with timely application. Visual quality matters too—proper lighting, clear audio, and thoughtful presentation aren't vanity; they're stewardship of the message entrusted to us.

Perhaps the most challenging aspect is maintaining doctrinal integrity while remaining relevant. The pressure to soften biblical positions on cultural issues is immense. Algorithms seem to reward those who blend in rather than stand out for biblical truth. We've watched videos on God's unchanging standards receive fewer views than those offering more palatable perspectives, yet we remain committed to teaching "the whole counsel of God" regardless of metrics.

Community building has emerged as both a challenge and an opportunity. Digital platforms create connection points, but genuine discipleship requires intentionality beyond comment sections. Our most encouraging moments come when online encounters lead to deeper engagement—viewers joining our physical gatherings, participating in Bible studies, or reaching out for prayer.

Looking ahead, we're adapting without compromising. Our upcoming children's content represents our belief that biblical literacy must begin early, especially in a digital age. We're exploring longer-form podcast content alongside short-form videos, recognising that spiritual growth requires both quick inspiration and deeper study.

The digital battlefield demands wisdom, perseverance, and grace. While we celebrate every view, like, and share as potential kingdom impact, we measure true success not by algorithms but by faithfulness to our calling. In this constant tension between digital effectiveness and spiritual integrity, we choose to stand firm on God's unchangeable Word while embracing new methods to proclaim it.

The battle for truth in digital spaces continues, but we take heart knowing that God's Word never returns void—whether shared from ancient scrolls or modern screens...

Why Trust the Bible? Part 2:

The Bible's Enduring Reliability…

Beyond its remarkable preservation, the Bible demonstrates its trustworthiness through its internal consistency. Despite being written over 1,500 years by more than 40 authors from diverse backgrounds—shepherds, kings, fishermen, tax collectors, and physicians—the Bible presents a unified message about God's redemptive plan for humanity.

The Bible's historical accuracy has been repeatedly confirmed by archaeology. Discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls have verified the precision of biblical transmission. As Isaiah proclaimed, "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever" (Isaiah 40:8 KJV). This remarkable preservation stands as testimony to divine oversight.

Consider the Bible's prophetic precision. Hundreds of specific prophecies have been fulfilled, including detailed predictions about the Messiah's birth, life, death, and resurrection. Jesus himself affirmed, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" (John 5:39 KJV). The mathematical probability of these prophecies being fulfilled by chance is infinitesimally small.

The Bible's transformative power provides compelling evidence of its divine origin. Countless lives have been radically changed through its teachings. As the writer of Hebrews noted, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12 KJV).

Scientific accuracy also underscores the Bible's trustworthiness. While not a scientific textbook, the Bible contains statements that align with modern scientific understanding, written millennia before these discoveries. For instance, it referenced the earth's spherical nature (Isaiah 40:22 KJV) and the existence of ocean currents (Psalm 8:8 KJV) long before these were scientifically established.

Finally, the Bible's indestructibility throughout history stands as testimony to its divine protection. Despite numerous attempts to destroy it—from Roman emperors to modern dictators—the Bible has survived and flourished. Jesus assured, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away" (Matthew 24:35 KJV).

When we approach the Bible with an open heart and mind, examining its claims fairly, we discover a document unlike any other. Its reliability isn't merely academic—it's experiential. The apostle Paul affirmed this when writing to Timothy: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16 KJV).

In an age of relativism and scepticism, the Bible offers an unchanging foundation of truth. As we immerse ourselves in its teachings, we discover not just historical accuracy or literary brilliance, but the living voice of God speaking into our circumstances today. "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Peter 1:21 KJV).

Trust in the Bible isn't blind faith but reasoned confidence based on substantial evidence. This ancient text continues to reveal its relevance, reliability, and divine inspiration to each new generation seeking truth…

With Christ's love,

Dave & Elaine
