Week 36

Week 36

Welcome to Your Weekly Round-up Sunday!

Greetings, beloved community! As we approach the final days of August and welcome September, we're thrilled to present this week's spiritual feast at Back to Basics: Christian living. This Week 36 edition brings you thought-provoking teachings, practical wisdom, and soul-nourishing content designed to strengthen your walk with Christ.

In a world that increasingly challenges Biblical truth, our ministry remains committed to providing solid, Scripture-based guidance that helps you navigate life's complexities with faith and discernment. From exploring Biblical compassion to examining why our culture rejects absolute truth, we've prepared a rich tapestry of teachings to equip you for the week ahead.

Whether you join us at our Outpost gatherings in Carlisle, engage with our daily YouTube content, or follow our written teachings, each offering is crafted with prayer and careful attention to Biblical accuracy. Our prayer is that these resources will not merely inform but transform—moving you from being hearers only to becoming doers of the Word.

As you'll discover in this week's line-up, we're addressing crucial themes for today's believers: developing independent thought grounded in Scripture, demonstrating authentic faith through action, recognising the dangers of carnal Christianity, and much more. Each teaching builds upon our foundational commitment to return to the basics of Christian living in an age that often complicates the simplicity of following Christ.

So whether you're a long-time member of our community or discovering us for the first time, we invite you to join us for this week's journey through God's unchanging truth. Let's grow together in wisdom, faith, and Christlike character as we apply these teachings to our daily lives.

With anticipation for all God will do,

Dave & Elaine

Thinking for Yourself: Biblical Wisdom for Independent Thought!

In a world saturated with opinions, misinformation, and constant noise, the ability to think independently has become increasingly valuable yet increasingly rare. As Christians, we are called not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2 KJV). This transformation involves developing the discipline of thinking for ourselves while remaining anchored to God's eternal truth.

The Scriptures repeatedly emphasise the importance of developing a discerning mind. Proverbs 14:15 (KJV) warns, "The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going". This verse distinguishes between those who uncritically accept everything they hear and the wise who carefully evaluate information before accepting it. Similarly, 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV) instructs believers to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good", establishing the principle that Christians should test what they hear rather than passively receiving it.

When the Bereans encountered Paul's teaching, they didn't simply accept his words at face value despite his apostolic authority. Instead, Acts 17:11 (KJV) tells us "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so". Their nobility was demonstrated through their commitment to verifying teachings against Scripture – the ultimate standard of truth.

This commitment to intellectual integrity doesn't mean adopting a posture of cynicism or rebellion. Rather, it means holding fast to what Scripture defines as true while carefully evaluating all other claims. As Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) reminds us, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths". Our independent thinking must remain subject to God's wisdom.

In practical terms, thinking for yourself means:

  • Developing biblical literacy: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV). Regular, intentional Bible study equips us to recognise truth from error.
  • Cultivating discernment: "But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil" (Hebrews 5:14, KJV). Discernment grows through practice and experience.
  • Guarding against groupthink: "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat" (Matthew 7:13, KJV). The popular path is not always the right one.
  • Seeking wisdom: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" (James 1:5, KJV). Divine wisdom trumps human reasoning.

The capacity for independent thought is not just intellectually enriching; it's spiritually protective. False teachers prey on those unable to think critically, as Peter warns in 2 Peter 2:1-3 (KJV). By developing this ability, we safeguard ourselves against deception while honouring the mind God has given us.

As we navigate an increasingly complex world, let us commit to thinking clearly, biblically, and independently – not as an exercise in intellectual pride, but as faithful stewards of the minds God has entrusted to us, always remembering that "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7, KJV).

Why is the World so Increasingly Hostile to Absolute Truth?

Why is the world so increasingly hostile to absolute truth, when those that believe stand firmly on the unshakeable foundation of God's Word….

Navigating faith in a post-truth culture!

In a world increasingly hostile to absolute truth, Christians face unique challenges in standing firm on God's unchanging Word. This compelling exploration examines why our post-truth culture rejects absolute standards in favour of personal preference and relativism. From the elevation of individual autonomy to the influence of postmodernism, we uncover the cultural forces eroding truth's foundation. Yet rather than despair, this teaching offers practical wisdom for believers navigating these turbulent waters. Discover how to know truth deeply through Scripture, communicate it graciously, live it visibly, and pray for spiritual awakening. While society may champion the idea that "truth is whatever works for you," we're reminded that Jesus declared Himself not merely a truth, but THE truth—absolute, exclusive and universal. Join us as we explore how to remain unshaken on the solid ground of God's eternal Word in a culture built on shifting sands…

Our Christian Walk: Living out Your Faith!

Transforming Hearts & Changing Lives!

More Than a Private Matter!

Our Christian faith cannot remain hidden within us. Scripture consistently teaches that genuine faith manifests externally through actions, service, and bold witness. From the nine gifts of the Spirit to the fruit of the Spirit, from Jesus' teaching about being light to James' admonition that faith without works is dead, the Bible calls us to an active, visible faith. The early church exemplified this through their community life, generosity, and bold proclamation, even amid persecution. Today, we are called to the same visible expression of our faith—to be doers of the word, not hearers only, transforming the world around us through Christ's love in action…

Back to Basics: Be Doers & Not Hearers Only!

Faith in Action!

The Importance of Faith in Christianity!

In "Be Doers Not & Hearers Only," we explore the vital distinction between merely absorbing God's Word and actively living it out. Drawing from James' powerful teachings, this reflection examines how genuine faith manifests through action. Like someone who glances at a mirror only to forget their reflection, we risk becoming spiritual amnesiacs when we hear Scripture without application. Through biblical examples like Abraham and Rahab, we see faith perfected through obedience. As Jesus taught, kingdom citizenship demands more than verbal profession—it requires heart obedience. This teaching invites you to experience the blessings that come when faith moves beyond intellectual assent into transformative action, allowing your light to shine before others and glorify our Father in heaven…

NEWS! Updates and announcements about Back to Basics: Christian living, including content changes, newsletters, website updates, and valuable information for our audience…

Behind the Screens: Faith, Technology, and Our Journey at Back to Basics…

In a world dominated by slick productions and high-budget content, our small ministry at Back to Basics: Christian living has been navigating the challenging waters of modern technology with limited resources but boundless faith.

When we first embarked on this journey to share God's Word through digital platforms, little did we know the technical hurdles that awaited us. From temperamental recording equipment to mysterious website glitches that seemed to appear moments before scheduled uploads, technology has often tested not just our skills, but our patience and perseverance.

I remember one particular Tuesday evening when, just hours before our "Messages from the Outpost" teaching on absolute truth was scheduled to stream, our entire system crashed. As we frantically troubleshot cables, settings, and connections, I couldn't help but see the irony – here we were, preparing to speak about unwavering truth while everything around us seemed unstable!

Yet through these challenges, we've experienced something beautiful. Our community hasn't demanded Hollywood-quality production; they've valued authenticity over perfection. When our audio occasionally echoes or when lighting isn't studio-perfect, your gracious messages remind us that it's the message that matters most, not the medium.

Operating within our modest budget means making difficult choices – investing in essential equipment while foregoing the luxuries that larger ministries enjoy. It means late nights learning to edit videos ourselves rather than hiring professionals. It means converting spare rooms into makeshift studios and balancing day jobs with ministry commitments.

Despite these constraints, we're committed to bringing you consistent, quality content across multiple platforms – from our YouTube channel with its various series to our social media presence on Facebook, X, Instagram, Threads & yes TikTok. We believe that good stewardship means maximising every resource God has provided to reach as many people as possible with His life-changing truth.

Perhaps most heartening has been watching how God multiplies our limited resources. When we began our "Back to Basics: for KIDS!" initiative with just a smartphone camera and homemade props, we worried it might fall flat. Instead, families have embraced these simple but heartfelt teachings, sharing how they've sparked meaningful conversations about faith in their homes.

As we look to the future, we're excited about the possibilities. Technology may sometimes fight us, but it also connects us – allowing teachings delivered from our small corner in Carlisle to reach believers worldwide. Every view, comment, and share reminds us that this work matters beyond what we can see.

We may not have the budget of major ministries, but we have something money can't buy – a passionate community walking this journey alongside us. Your prayers, encouragement, and patience when things don't go perfectly sustain us through every technical challenge.

So thank you for valuing substance over style, for seeing beyond production values to the heart of what we're sharing. In a world obsessed with appearances, you've helped create a space where authentic faith can flourish – technical glitches and all.

With grateful hearts,

Dave & Elaine

Back to Basics: Christian Living - Your Faith Journey. We're excited to share insights and practical guidance to help strengthen your faith journey in 2025…

Taking Responsibility for Your Christian Walk!

In a world that increasingly deflects blame and evades accountability, Christians are called to embrace a different path—one of personal responsibility in our spiritual journey. The Apostle Paul's exhortation rings as true today as when he first penned it: "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12 KJV). This command underscores a fundamental truth: while salvation is God's gift, growing in faith requires our active participation.

Too often, we approach our Christian walk passively, expecting spiritual maturity to develop naturally or waiting for church leaders to spoon-feed our spiritual nourishment. Yet Scripture consistently emphasises personal responsibility. The writer of Hebrews admonishes believers who remain spiritual infants: "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat" (Hebrews 5:12 KJV).

Taking responsibility begins with personal engagement with God's Word. The Bereans were commended precisely because "they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so" (Acts 17:11 KJV). They didn't outsource their spiritual discernment but took personal responsibility to verify teachings against Scripture.

Responsibility also extends to spiritual disciplines. Prayer shouldn't be relegated to Sunday services or crisis moments. Jesus taught persistent, private prayer: "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret" (Matthew 6:6 KJV). Regular communion with God through prayer is our responsibility, not our pastor's.

In our modern culture of victimhood, Christians must remember the biblical call to ownership of our spiritual growth. While circumstances may be beyond our control, our response to them remains our choice. Joseph exemplified this when, rather than blaming his brothers for his suffering, he recognised God's sovereign purpose: "But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good" (Genesis 50:20 KJV).

Taking responsibility means acknowledging our failings without excuses. David, when confronted with his sin, didn't blame Bathsheba or the pressures of kingship but confessed, "I have sinned against the LORD" (2 Samuel 12:13 KJV). This honest acknowledgement is the first step toward spiritual renewal.

Responsibility extends to our impact on others. Paul instructs, "Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth [well-being]" (1 Corinthians 10:24 KJV). Our spiritual maturity isn't merely for personal benefit but for strengthening the entire body of Christ.

Ultimately, responsibility reminds us that we will each give account before God: "So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God" (Romans 14:12 KJV). This sobering reality should motivate us to take ownership of our faith journey rather than coasting through Christian life.

As we embrace responsibility for our Christian walk, we discover the truth that acknowledging our dependence on God's grace enables us to take decisive action in faith. For as James reminds us, "faith without works is dead" (James 2:26 KJV)—a powerful call to responsible Christian living in a world of spiritual passivity…

With Christ's love,

Dave & Elaine
