What Direction is your Life taking as a Christian Believer?
Every road has a direction
Every road we travel has signposts. They tell us where we are, where we are heading, and how far we still have to go. Some warn us of danger; others point us back to safety. Without them, we would soon be lost. The Christian life is no different. God has placed signposts all along the narrow way, and the question every believer has to answer is simple but searching — am I actually reading them, and am I going in the direction they point?
Jesus Himself spoke of two roads, and He could not have made the contrast plainer. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” [Matthew 7:13–14 KJV]. There are only ever two directions in the Kingdom — towards Christ or away from Him. There is no neutral lane, no middle road, no spiritual lay-by where we can park our discipleship and still call ourselves followers of Jesus.
Stop & read the signs
We live in a generation that is moving fast. People are busy, distracted, and often spiritually exhausted, and the danger is that we keep driving without ever checking the signs. Paul wrote, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” [Ephesians 5:15–16 KJV]. To walk circumspectly is to walk with your eyes open — looking, weighing, watching the road. It is the opposite of drifting. Drifting is the great enemy of the modern believer, because you can drift a long way before you realise you have moved at all.
So let me ask you plainly — when did you last stop and read the signs over your own life? When did you last pull over and ask, “Lord, am I still on the road You set me on?” The signposts are there. The Word is there. The Spirit is there. But we have to be willing to slow down long enough to read them.
The signposts God has given us
God has not left us guessing about the direction of our lives. He has given us clear, unmistakable markers.
The first signpost is the Word of God. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” [Psalm 119:105 KJV]. Notice — a lamp to your feet, not a floodlight to the horizon. God gives you enough light for the next step. If you are not in the Word, you are walking in the dark, and you will end up where the dark leads.
The second signpost is the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” [Romans 8:14 KJV]. Sonship is proved by being led. If you cannot remember the last time you sensed the Spirit redirecting you, convicting you, or comforting you, that itself is a signpost — telling you that something needs to change.
The third signpost is the fruit of your life. Jesus said, “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20 KJV]. Fruit does not lie. We can fool people with words, but we cannot fool God with fruit. The direction of your life is revealed not in what you say on Sunday but in what you produce Monday to Saturday.
The fourth signpost is the company you keep. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” [Proverbs 13:20 KJV]. Tell me who you walk with, and I will tell you which way you are facing.
When the signs say turn
Sometimes the signs are not telling us to keep going — they are telling us to turn. That word in the Bible is repentance. It is not a religious word for feeling sorry; it is a directional word. It means change your mind, change your course, change your direction. Peter preached it on the Day of Pentecost: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” [Acts 2:38 KJV].
If you have been heading the wrong way, the gospel is good news, because “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” [2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV]. You do not have to keep driving down a road you know is leading nowhere. There is a junction in front of you, and the signpost has the name of Jesus on it.
Press toward the mark
For those of us already on the road, the call is to keep going — but to keep going with purpose. Paul said, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” [Philippians 3:14 KJV]. The mark is ahead. The prize is ahead. Heaven is ahead. The signs are pointing us forward, not backward, and certainly not sideways.
So take a moment today. Be honest. Look at the signs.
- Where is your Bible reading taking you?
- Where is your prayer life taking you?
- Where are your friendships, your habits, your screen time, your spending, your speech taking you?
- Where is your obedience — or your disobedience — taking you?
Because the truth is this: every step is a step somewhere. You are either getting closer to Christ or further from Him. There is no standing still on the narrow way…
