Bring the Thunder!
The Thunder That Shakes Nations
There's something electrifying about a thunderstorm, isn't there? The way the sky darkens, the air becomes charged, and then—crack!—the thunder rolls across the heavens with unmistakable power. It commands attention. It shakes the ground. It reminds us that there are forces far greater than ourselves at work in this world. And yet, as Christians living in these last days, I have to ask: where is our thunder?
The Spiritual Thunder We've Lost
I'm not talking about literal storms. I'm talking about the spiritual thunder that should be rolling from the Church. I'm talking about the kind of boldness, authority, and uncompromising truth that shakes the foundations of darkness and brings the lost to their knees in conviction. The kind of Christianity that doesn't whisper when it should shout, that doesn't apologise when it should proclaim, and that doesn't retreat when it should advance.
We live in a generation that has domesticated the Gospel. We've turned the Lion of Judah into a house cat. We've swapped the fear of the Lord for the approval of men. We've traded truth for tolerance, holiness for happiness, and the power of God for the comfort of self. And the result? A Church that's more concerned with being liked than being light. A Church that's more worried about offending the world than honouring the Word.
The Call to Be Salt & Light
But that's not what Jesus called us to. He didn't call us to be quiet, polite, or invisible. He called us to be salt and light. He called us to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. He called us to make disciples, to baptise, to teach obedience to everything He commanded. And let me tell you something—there's nothing passive about that calling.
Look at the Apostles. Look at Peter on the Day of Pentecost, standing up with boldness and declaring the truth of Christ to thousands. Look at Paul, who said, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth" [Romans 1:16 KJV]. These men brought the thunder. They shook cities. They turned the world upside down. They didn't apologise for the truth—they proclaimed it with fire in their bones and the Holy Spirit as their strength.
The Power Within Us
And here's the thing: that same Spirit lives in us. That same power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in every born-again believer. So why are we so silent? Why are we so timid? Why have we allowed the world to set the agenda whilst the Church sits on the side lines, hoping not to offend anyone?
Jesus Himself said, "I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?" [Luke 12:49 KJV]. He didn't come to bring peace in the way the world thinks of peace—He came to bring division between truth and lies, light and darkness, righteousness and sin. He came to set hearts ablaze with passion for God and hunger for holiness. And He expects us to carry that same fire.
Cultural Acceptance vs. Biblical Faithfulness
But instead, we've become a generation of Christians who are more concerned with being culturally acceptable than being biblically faithful. We've allowed the world to tell us what we can and cannot say, what we can and cannot believe, and how we should or shouldn't live. We've let the enemy redefine marriage, redefine gender, redefine morality, and we've sat back and said nothing because we don't want to be labelled as intolerant or unloving.
But here's the truth: real love tells the truth. Real love warns of danger. Real love points people to Jesus, not to themselves. And real love isn't afraid to offend if it means saving a soul from hell.
No Spirit of Fear
Paul wrote to Timothy, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" [2 Timothy 1:7 KJV]. We have not been given a spirit of fear. We have been given power. We have been given love. We have been given sound minds that are rooted in the truth of God's Word. So why are we acting like we're powerless? Why are we cowering in the corner when we should be storming the gates of hell with the Gospel?
It's time to bring the thunder, Church. It's time to stop playing it safe. It's time to stop worrying about what people think and start caring about what God thinks. It's time to preach the Word in season and out of season, to reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine, just as Paul commanded Timothy in [2 Timothy 4:2 KJV].
A World That Needs to Hear
The world is dying. People are lost. They're wandering in darkness, searching for meaning, searching for hope, searching for truth. And we have the answer. We have the Gospel. We have the message that can set captives free, heal the broken-hearted, and give eternal life to all who believe. But if we don't speak it—if we don't live it with boldness and conviction—how will they ever hear?
"How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" [Romans 10:14 KJV]. They won't. They can't. Unless we step up. Unless we open our mouths. Unless we bring the thunder.
Thunder Doesn't Ask Permission
And here's what I love about thunder: it doesn't ask for permission. It doesn't apologise. It just comes. It announces the presence of the storm, and everything else has to take notice. That's what the Church should be like. We should be so bold, so unashamed, so full of the Spirit that when we speak, the world has to take notice. Not because we're loud or obnoxious, but because we carry the authority of the living God.
Jesus gave His disciples a new name—sons of thunder. Why? Because they were passionate. Because they were zealous. Because they were willing to call down fire from heaven if that's what it took to defend the honour of their Lord. Now, Jesus corrected their methods, but He never corrected their passion. He wants us to be passionate. He wants us to be bold. He wants us to care more about His Kingdom than our own comfort.
What It Means to Bring the Thunder in 2026
So what does it mean to bring the thunder in 2026? It means preaching the whole counsel of God without compromise. It means standing on biblical truth even when it's unpopular. It means calling sin what it is—sin—and calling people to repentance. It means living a life of holiness that's so radically different from the world that people can't help but see Jesus in you.
It means praying with fervency and faith, believing that God still moves mountains and still answers prayers. It means worshipping with everything you've got, not because it makes you feel good, but because He is worthy. It means discipling the next generation, teaching them to love God's Word and to walk in obedience to it.
And it means refusing to be silent when the world needs to hear the truth. "Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins" [Isaiah 58:1 KJV]. That's our mandate. That's our mission. That's our calling.
Where Is Our Thunder?
So I ask you again: where is our thunder? Where is the boldness? Where is the fire? Where is the Church that turns the world upside down?
It starts with you. It starts with me. It starts with each of us choosing to live radically, speak boldly, and love fiercely for the sake of the Gospel. It starts with us refusing to be lukewarm, refusing to be silent, and refusing to be ashamed.
The world is waiting. The lost are crying out. And the Lord is looking for those who will stand in the gap, who will be His voice, who will bring the thunder.
Will you be one of them?
"The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty" [Psalm 29:3-4 KJV].
