Repent or Die!
The Word That Divides the World
Some words are easy to say. This is not one of them. Yet it was the first word the Lord Jesus preached, the word John the Baptist thundered in the wilderness, and the word the apostles carried to the ends of the earth. One word — and it still cuts the whole world clean in two: Repent.
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand [Matthew 4:17 KJV].
We would rather soften it. We would rather talk of love without holiness, grace without turning, heaven without the cross. But God has not given us that gospel. He has drawn a line straight through the middle of humanity, and every single person stands on one side of it or the other. There is no third ground — only two roads, leading to two very different eternities. The Bible does not divide people by class, colour, wealth or cleverness. It divides them by one thing only: their relationship to Jesus Christ. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him [John 3:36 KJV].
Read that slowly. Two people. One has everlasting life — present tense, held in the hand right now. The other shall not see life, and the wrath of God already rests upon him. Not one day might. It abideth — it stays. That is not scaremongering; it is the plain reading of Scripture. Every man, woman and child alive is either in Christ or outside of Him, and the difference is not small. It is the difference between life and death.
What Repentance Really Means
Repentance is not merely feeling sorry. Judas felt sorry, and went out and hanged himself. Repentance is a change of mind that becomes a change of direction. It is turning — turning from sin, turning from self, turning to God. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out [Acts 3:19 KJV].
To repent is to stop walking your own way and start walking His. It is to agree with God that you are a sinner, that Christ died for sinners, and that only His blood can wash you clean. It costs you your pride. It costs you your old life. But what you lose is nothing compared to what you gain — and what you keep by refusing is nothing compared to what you lose.
Two Roads, Two Outcomes
For the one who repents and believes, the future is not fear — it is glory. The wrath is gone, borne already by Christ upon the cross. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus [Romans 8:1 KJV]. The believer will still die — unless the Lord returns first — but death for the Christian is not the end; it is the door. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain [Philippians 1:21 KJV]. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. And beyond that waits a resurrection, a new heaven and a new earth, a city whose builder and maker is God, where God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying [Revelation 21:4 KJV]. That is the outcome for the one who turns. Life. Real life. Everlasting life.
But we do the lost no kindness by hiding the other road. Scripture is not silent, and neither dare we be. For those who will not repent, the future is real, it is conscious, and it is eternal. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal [Matthew 25:46 KJV]. The same Jesus who spoke of heaven spoke more of hell than anyone else in the Bible. He warned of a place of outer darkness, of weeping and gnashing of teeth, of a fire that is not quenched. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord [Romans 6:23 KJV]. Sin pays a wage, and that wage is death — separation from God for ever. This is not God being cruel. This is God being just, and it is the very reason the cross was necessary.
Today Is the Day
Here is the mercy in the middle of the warning: while there is breath, there is time. God now commandeth all men every where to repent [Acts 17:30 KJV]. Not tomorrow. Not one day. Now. Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation [2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV].
"Repent or die" is not a threat shouted from a distance; it is a warning called out by One who loves you enough to tell you the truth. The Lord is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance [2 Peter 3:9 KJV]. He is not eager to condemn. He is holding the door open. But the door will not stay open for ever, and no one is promised the next breath.
So the question is not clever, but it is the most important you will ever answer. Which road are you on? If you have never turned to Christ, turn today. Confess your sin, believe on the Lord Jesus, and receive the everlasting life He died to give. And if you are already His, walk worthy of it — and tell someone else, while there is still time, that the choice is real: repent, and live…
