Saved in the End? Why the Natural Man Thinks He'll Make It Regardless

The Assumption That Could Cost a Soul Everything

Ask the average man in the street whether he'll be saved in the end, and — however he is living — he'll usually say yes. He may never read the Bible, never darken a church door, never turn from a single sin, and still carry a quiet certainty that when it's all over he'll be alright. He lives as he pleases and expects heaven anyway. But where does that confidence come from? Not from the Word of God. And a hope built on anything but the Word is a hope built on sand. Let's open it up.

Why the Natural Man Presumes He's Safe

He presumes on the mercy of God. "God is love — He'd never turn anyone away." And God is love. But the same Bible warns of a broad road that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat [Matthew 7:13 KJV]. He mistakes God's patience for God's approval — Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil [Ecclesiastes 8:11 KJV]. Delay is not pardon.

He thinks he can sow as he likes and dodge the harvest. He lives for himself, indulges the flesh, keeps sin as a pet — and still expects a reward at the end. But God is not fooled: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap [Galatians 6:7 KJV]. A man cannot plant thistles all his life and gather wheat at the last.

He banks on it all coming right in the end — a last-minute change, a deathbed prayer, a vague sorting-out before the gates. But no man is promised tomorrow, and Scripture is plain: it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment [Hebrews 9:27 KJV]. There is no negotiating after that appointment.

He measures himself by his own goodness and by others worse than himself. As long as someone is further down the road, he feels safe — the Pharisee's prayer in modern dress: God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are [Luke 18:11 KJV]. But the standard was never the man next door. It was Christ.

And beneath it all lies a deceived heart and a blinded mind. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? [Jeremiah 17:9 KJV]; and the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not [2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV]. He cannot see the danger he stands in — and that blindness is itself part of the danger.

Why How You Live Can Never Be Set Aside

Here is the heart of it: no one is saved in the end regardless of how they lived. Salvation is not earned by good behaviour — but a life left unchanged by God is the very proof that God was never let in. Jesus said, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God [John 3:3 KJV]. The new birth changes the man, and the changed man walks a new road. That is why the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God [1 Corinthians 6:9 KJV] — not because grace runs short, but because a heart still in love with sin was never truly born again. And the Lord leaves no room for presumption: except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish [Luke 13:3 KJV].

So the question is not "Will it all sort itself out in the end?" It never will on its own. The question is: have you been born again — and does your life show it? If there is any doubt, don't gamble your soul on an assumption. Repent, come to Christ, receive His mercy, and build your hope on the Rock that cannot be moved…
