The Talk That Left You Feeling Good — and Empty

Walk into many churches today and you will hear a good talk. It is warm. It is uplifting. It quotes a verse or two, it makes you smile, and you leave feeling better about yourself than when you walked in. But ask yourself one honest question: were you fed, or were you flattered?

More and more, what passes for teaching from the modern pulpit is not teaching at all. It is motivation. It is the language of the self-help shelf and the business seminar, gently baptised, sprinkled with a Bible verse, and served up as though it fell down from heaven. It sounds Christian. It is not. And that, plainly, is the danger.

Worldly Wisdom in a Bible Suit

Here is the trick, and it is an old one. Take an idea born in the world — believe in yourself, chase your dreams, your best life is one decision away — and wrap a verse around it so it sounds like Scripture. The clothing is biblical. The body underneath is not. Paul saw it coming: Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ [Colossians 2:8 KJV].

Note the word — spoil. Not merely disagree with. Spoil. Plunder. Rob. And it is done not with an open attack but with a smile, because the great deceiver never turns up looking like a devil. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light [2 Corinthians 11:14 KJV]. He does not need horns. He only needs a microphone and a friendly turn of phrase.

From Fables to "Modern-Day Parables"

This is where it has become truly dangerous. These motivational talks are no longer treated as a little encouragement on the side — they are being promoted as modern-day parables, passed around as though the Lord Himself had spoken them. People repeat them. People build their thinking on them. People pass them on to others as gospel truth, never once stopping to ask where the water came from.

The Bible named this generation long ago: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables [2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV]. Read it again. Turned unto fables. That is exactly what a "modern-day parable" is — a fable given a halo.

Doctrines of Devils Come Smiling

We hear "doctrines of devils" and we picture something dark and obvious. But the Spirit did not describe it that way. He described a departure — a drift — a giving of heed: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils [1 Timothy 4:1 KJV]. Seducing spirits do not shout. They seduce. They make error feel wonderful. A lie that felt like a lie would deceive nobody; it is the lie that feels like love, feels like freedom, feels like God, that empties the pews of truth while filling them with people.

Feeding the Soul, Starving the Spirit

Here is the heart of it. This teaching feels good because it feeds the soul — the mind, the emotions, the appetite for comfort. But God gave us His Word to feed the spirit, and it cuts clean between the two: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit [Hebrews 4:12 KJV]. A talk that only warms your feelings and never touches your obedience has fed the wrong part of you. You go home full — and starving.

And this is the opposite of why we are here. We are not called to feel good; we are called to walk worthy: That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work [Colossians 1:10 KJV]. And we are called to do, not merely to be moved: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV].

Is It Too Late?

Has it gone too far? Humanly, it is hard not to fear so. When feel-good talks become the norm and sound doctrine becomes the exception, when fables are honoured as parables and the plain preaching of the cross is thought too hard, it can feel as though the damage is already done. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death [Proverbs 14:12 KJV].

But the cure has never changed, and it has never once failed. It is not a cleverer talk. It is the Word — preached plainly, taken exactly, obeyed daily: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine [2 Timothy 4:2 KJV]. Whatever recovery the church sees will not come through better motivation. It will come through men and women who go back to basics, open the Book, and let it say what it says.

So test what you are being fed. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth [2 Timothy 2:15 KJV]. If a teaching only makes you feel good but never calls you to repent, to obey, to change — it is not the truth that God has set in His Word for us. It is worldly thinking in Bible clothes. And it is time we called it exactly that…
