You Can't Handle the Truth!

The Line Everybody Can Quote

There is a scene in the film A Few Good Men that people can quote even if they have never watched it. A young military lawyer, played by Tom Cruise, stands in a courtroom and presses a hardened colonel, played by Jack Nicholson, for a straight answer. "I want the truth!" he shouts. The colonel leans into the microphone and snarls back, "You can't handle the truth!"

It is only a film. But that line has stayed in people's mouths for decades, and I think I know why. It touches something we all recognise in ourselves. We say we want the truth. What we usually want is a version of it we can live with.

We Ask for Truth and Settle for Comfort

The church has a problem, and it is not the world outside the doors. It is us. Believers and unbelievers sit side by side in the same room. Those who are saved and those who only think they are saved sing the same songs and use the same language. And a great many in both groups have quietly built their own version of the truth, one that allows them to live exactly as the world lives while still wearing the name tag of "Christian".

That is not a small adjustment. Scripture has a word for it, and the word is deception. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves [James 1:22 KJV]. Look carefully at who is deceived there. Not the neighbours. Not the preacher. Ourselves. A man can fool a congregation for years and never once fool God, and the tragedy is that he usually ends up fooling himself first.

Truth Is Not an Opinion, It Is a Person

We talk about truth as though it were a subject to be debated. Jesus never presented it that way. I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me [John 14:6 KJV]. He did not say He had views about truth, or that He pointed towards it. He said He is it.

That changes everything. When we edit the truth to suit ourselves, we are not tidying up a doctrine, we are pushing away Christ. And He fixed truth to the written Word so we would never have to guess: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth [John 17:17 KJV]. If the Word says it, that settles it, whether it suits me today or not.

Why Truth Matters More Than Anything Else in Our Walk

This is the heart of it. Truth is the most important part of our walk with Him, because everything else in the Christian life is built on it and collapses without it.

Faith cannot stand on something false. Worship cannot rise from something false. Obedience to a lie is not obedience, it is just effort in the wrong direction. You can be sincere, busy, emotional and generous, and still be walking away from God if what you are walking on is not true.

Jesus laid the order out plainly: If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free [John 8:31-32 KJV]. Continue in the Word, then know the truth, then walk free. Nobody gets to the freedom by skipping the Word. And there is no worship without it either: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth [John 4:24 KJV]. Spirit without truth is emotion. Truth without spirit is dry religion. He asks for both.

The Name Tag Is Not the Life

A label costs nothing. A life costs everything. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven [Matthew 7:21 KJV].

John puts it even more bluntly: If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth [1 John 1:6 KJV]. Notice he does not say we are merely mistaken. He says we lie. A Christian name over a worldly life is a false claim, and deep down the person making it knows.

Itching Ears Are Not New

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables [2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV].

Read that again and see where the problem starts. It does not start with bad teachers. It starts with people who will not endure sound teaching and then go looking for someone who will say something softer. The appetite creates the market. If we only listen to what flatters us, we will always be able to find someone willing to sell it.

He Wants Truth Where Nobody Is Watching

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts [Psalm 51:6 KJV]. God begins on the inside, in the place where there is no audience and no applause. That is where honesty either lives or dies.

So the question is not whether the teaching is true. The question is whether we will let it be true about us. Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith [2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV]. That is not morbid introspection, it is basic Christian honesty, and it is far kinder than the alternative of finding out too late.

So Can You Handle the Truth?

Here is how you handle it. Read the Word as it is written, not as you wish it were written. Let it correct you before you use it to correct anybody else. Sit under teaching that costs you something. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth [John 16:13 KJV]. Carry it properly, speaking the truth in love [Ephesians 4:15 KJV], not as a stick to beat people with. And when the pressure comes to soften it, remember the instruction: Buy the truth, and sell it not [Proverbs 23:23 KJV].

In the film, that famous line was a wall a proud man hid behind. In the Christian life, truth is not the thing that destroys you. It is the only thing that sets you free. You can handle it, because the One who is the truth is holding you while it does its work…
