Part 1 — Blessed Before You Did Anything

God settled who you are before you ever got it right…

A chapter that never mentions your performance

Read Ephesians chapter one slowly and notice something strange. It is one long list of what God has done — and your performance is never mentioned once.

Not your church attendance. Not your prayer life. Not your good weeks or your bad ones. Chapter one is God speaking about what He has already done in Christ, and inviting you to believe it.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ [Ephesians 1:3 KJV].

Stop at two words: hath blessed. Not might bless. Not will bless if you pull your socks up. Past tense. Finished. Signed and sealed before you ever opened your Bible this morning.

And notice where those blessings are kept: in heavenly places in Christ. Not in your circumstances, not in your bank balance, not in how you feel on a Tuesday. They are held in Christ — which means nothing in this world can get at them.

Chosen, adopted, accepted

Paul keeps going, and every line is another piece of ground under your feet.

According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love [Ephesians 1:4 KJV].

Before the foundation of the world. Before you were born, before you sinned, before you repented — God had already set His love on people in Christ, and now, being born again, you are one of them.

Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will [Ephesians 1:5 KJV].

Adoption. That is a family word, not a religious one. God did not take you on as staff. He took you in as a child. And He did it according to the good pleasure of his will — it pleased Him to do it. He was not persuaded, pressured or paid. He wanted you.

That is worth sitting with for a minute, especially if you grew up feeling like the spare part in every room.

Redeemed and forgiven — at a price

Grace is free to us. It was not free to God.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace [Ephesians 1:7 KJV].

Redemption means a price was paid to buy someone out. The price was the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the measure of the forgiveness is not out of the riches of His grace — as if God gave a little from a big pile — but according to them. God forgives on the scale of His own riches, not on the scale of your worthiness.

So when the accuser whispers that your sin was too much, the answer is not I have tried hard since. The answer is the blood was enough.

Sealed with the Holy Spirit

Then comes the part many believers have never been taught plainly.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance [Ephesians 1:13-14 KJV].

A seal marked ownership and guaranteed delivery. When you believed, God put His own mark on you by the Holy Spirit — and called it the earnest, the deposit, the down payment on everything still to come.

God does not put down a deposit and walk away. The Holy Spirit in you is God's guarantee that He intends to finish what He started.

The prayer worth praying for yourself

After all that, Paul prays. And what he prays for is not more blessings — it is the eyes to see the ones already given.

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling [Ephesians 1:17-18 KJV].

That is the honest need of most believers. Not more from God — more sight of what God has already done. Plenty of Christians are living like paupers on an estate that is already in their name.

And the chapter closes with the settled order of things: God gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body [Ephesians 1:22-23 KJV]. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Head. The church is the body. Not a club, not a building — a living body under a living Head.

What it says

Ephesians 1 in plain words: God chose you in Christ before the world began, adopted you as His child because it pleased Him to, redeemed and forgave you by the blood of His Son, sealed you with the Holy Spirit as the guarantee of everything to come, and set Christ as Head over all things to the church, which is His body.

All of it is already done. None of it depends on today's performance.

Walk it out

Here is the practical difference this makes.

A believer who does not know chapter one lives on a see-saw. Good week — God must be pleased with me. Bad week — God must have gone off me. Their assurance rises and falls with their behaviour, and they are exhausted.

A believer who does know chapter one stands on something that does not move. They still repent when they sin — quickly, honestly — but they repent as a child in the house, not as a beggar at the gate.

And it changes how you handle other believers too. If God chose them, adopted them and sealed them, you cannot treat them as second class because they are newer, poorer, younger or more awkward than you.

Ephesians in a sentence: God blessed you before you did anything, so nothing you do today can undo it...

Take a piece of paper and write down the seven things God says He has already done for you in this chapter: blessed, chosen, predestinated to adoption, accepted, redeemed, forgiven, sealed.

Then pray Paul's prayer over yourself, out loud, in your own words — ask God to open the eyes of your understanding to see what is already yours.

Keep that paper where you will see it on a bad day. That is the day it is for.

Prayer: Father, thank You that You blessed me before I ever deserved it and chose me before I ever knew You. Thank You for redemption through the blood of Your Son and for the Holy Spirit as the seal of Your promise. Open the eyes of my understanding, that I may know the hope of Your calling and stop living like a pauper. Let this settle my heart today. In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen…
