Part 4 — Walk Worthy

The doctrine is settled. Now put your shoes on…
Part 4 — Walk Worthy

The hinge of the whole letter

Everything in Ephesians turns on one word at the start of chapter four. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called [Ephesians 4:1 KJV]. Therefore. Because of chapters one, two and three — because you were chosen, redeemed, forgiven, quickened, raised, seated, sealed and brought into one body — therefore, walk like it. That is the order of the Christian life and it never reverses. You do not walk worthy in order to be loved by God. You walk worthy because you already are.

And notice the word walk. Not sprint. Not soar. Walk — ordinary, repeated, one foot in front of the other, in the same direction, for years. That is what our theme verse asks too: that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work [Colossians 1:10 KJV].

What walking worthy looks like

Paul does not leave it vague. He tells us exactly what the walk is made of. With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace [Ephesians 4:2-3 KJV]. Not one word about platform, gifting or reputation. Four ordinary, costly things:

The four marks of a worthy walk:

• Lowliness — not thinking less of yourself, just thinking of yourself less
• Meekness — strength under control, the ability to hold your tongue when you could win
• Longsuffering — putting up with people for longer than feels fair
• Forbearing one another in love — carrying each other's rough edges without keeping score

And then that word endeavouring. Unity is not automatic. It is worked at. Notice we are not told to create unity — God has already made one body. We are told to keep it. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all [Ephesians 4:4-6 KJV].

Given to grow us up

God does not leave the body to fend for itself. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ [Ephesians 4:11-12 KJV]. Read the purpose clause slowly, because most churches get it backwards. Those ministries were not given so that a few professionals could do all the work while everyone else watches. They were given for the perfecting of the saints — to equip ordinary believers to do the work of the ministry. The teacher's job is not to be the ministry. It is to get you ready for yours.

And the goal is maturity: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine [Ephesians 4:14 KJV]. Children believe the last thing they heard. Grown believers know the Word well enough not to be blown about by every new voice online. Instead, speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ [Ephesians 4:15 KJV]. Truth without love wounds. Love without truth flatters. Together, they grow people up.

Off with the old, on with the new

Then comes the practical heart of the chapter, and it is wonderfully plain. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness [Ephesians 4:22-24 KJV]. Put off. Be renewed. Put on. Like changing out of filthy work clothes at the end of a shift — you do not stand about in them, and you do not put them back on in the morning. And Paul gets specific, which is where teaching stops being comfortable:

What comes off, and what goes on:

• Lying off, truth on — speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another [Ephesians 4:25 KJV]
• Simmering anger off — let not the sun go down upon your wrath [Ephesians 4:26 KJV]
• Stealing off, honest work on — and work that he may have to give to him that needeth [Ephesians 4:28 KJV]
• Corrupt talk off, edifying talk on — words that it may minister grace unto the hearers [Ephesians 4:29 KJV]
• Bitterness off, kindness on — forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you [Ephesians 4:32 KJV]

And in the middle of it, a verse that ought to make us all careful: And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption [Ephesians 4:30 KJV]. Notice what grieves the Holy Spirit in the context — not scandalous sin, but bitterness, sharp words and unkindness between believers.

What it says

Ephesians 4 in plain words: because of everything God has done, walk worthy — in lowliness, meekness, longsuffering and love — working to keep the unity God has already made. God gave ministries to equip ordinary believers for the work and to grow them into maturity, so they are not blown about by every wind of doctrine. Then, practically: put off the old man, be renewed in your mind, and put on the new — truth instead of lying, resolved anger instead of simmering, honest work instead of taking, words that build instead of words that rot, kindness and forgiveness instead of bitterness.

💡Ephesians in a sentence: God has settled who you are — now walk like somebody who believes it…

What this chapter should change

Here is the test of this chapter, and it is not a doctrinal one. It is a Tuesday-afternoon one. How do you speak to your family when you are tired? What happens in you when someone in the church gets the recognition you wanted? How long do you carry an offence? What comes out of your mouth about people who are not in the room? That is the walk. Not the singing. Not the notes in your Bible. The walk. And note how much of chapter four is about speech — lying, angry words, corrupt communication, clamour, evil speaking. If God were to change only your tongue this week, most of your Christian life would change with it.

So take one item off the list and deal with it before you sleep. Most of us know exactly which one it is — the unanswered message, the sharp reply you owe an apology for, the grudge you have nursed since spring, the habit of talking about someone rather than to them. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath [Ephesians 4:26 KJV]. Deal with one thing today, and let the sun go down on a clean slate.

💡
Prayer: Father, thank You that You settled who I am before You asked anything of me. Now help me walk worthy of it. Give me lowliness when I want recognition, meekness when I could win the argument, and patience with people I find hard. Guard my tongue. Show me what to put off today and what to put on, and let me not grieve Your Holy Spirit with bitterness or unkind words. In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen!
👣 Walk it out: Take one item off Paul's list — the apology you owe, the grudge you are nursing, the message you have been avoiding — and deal with it before you sleep tonight. One thing, put right today, and let the sun go down on a clean slate…

Key Takeaways:

  • Therefore is the hinge — doctrine first, then the daily walk — [Ephesians 4:1 KJV]
  • A worthy walk is lowliness, meekness, longsuffering and forbearing love — [Ephesians 4:2 KJV]
  • We do not create unity; we keep the unity God has already made — [Ephesians 4:3-6 KJV]
  • Ministries are given to equip the saints for the work, not to do it for them — [Ephesians 4:11-12 KJV]
  • Maturity means no longer being carried about with every wind of doctrine — [Ephesians 4:14 KJV]
  • Put off the old man, be renewed in mind, put on the new — [Ephesians 4:22-24 KJV]
  • Bitterness and cutting words grieve the Holy Spirit; kindness and forgiveness are commanded — [Ephesians 4:30-32 KJV]

Where to go from here:

Read Ephesians 4 KJV through in one sitting, then go back over Ephesians 4:22-32 KJV slowly with a pen — one column for what comes off, one for what goes on. Then take the step above: one item dealt with before you sleep tonight.
