Week 26

Week 26

Your Weekly Round-up Sunday!

Welcome to Week 26 — and what a week we've prepared for you.

One thread runs through everything below: the real Christian life is rooted in Christ, proved in daily obedience, and lived inside His church. Plain. Practical. Powerful. Truth you can walk out tomorrow.

We open with a teaching close to our hearts — The Daily Habit That Holds Everything Together — a reminder that the believer left standing after the storm is the one who quietly read, prayed, and obeyed on the ordinary days.

Then, Monday to Friday:

This week's daily teaching:
📖 MonConnected to Christ — Always! — why Jesus died so you'd never be cut off from Him.
📖 TueIn Pursuit of Your Purpose! — plain truth for the believer tired of drifting.
📖 WedAccountability… — walking close, walking clean, walking together.
📖 ThuStorm-proof Your Christian Life! — only the house built on the Rock will stand.
📖 FriTwo Churches, Two Outcomes (Part Four) — what happens when the sheep are shepherded… and when they're not.

Alongside the teaching, our YouTube channel keeps you fed every day — Something to Think About, Messages from the Outpost, Write This Down, and more — plus episodes of our Blazing Apostles and Saturday Conversations podcasts. And don't miss our special Father's Day piece, Honouring Fathers — At Home and in the Church.

We close the week as we began it — with a teaching to carry home: No Lone Sheep — Why You Were Never Meant to Walk Alone — a loving call back to the fold for anyone who's quietly drifted.

So settle in, open your Bible alongside us, and let's walk this week together. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only [James 1:22 KJV].

With Christ's love,
Dave & Elaine

The Daily Habit That Holds Everything Together

Why the believer who prays, reads, and obeys each day is the one left standing…

Ask any believer who has come through a real storm what held them, and you will rarely hear about one dramatic moment. You will hear about the ordinary days. The quiet morning with an open Bible. The prayer nobody saw. The small act of obedience that felt like nothing at the time.

That is where the Christian life is won — not on the mountaintop, but in the daily habit.

We love to talk about big faith. But big faith is only small faithfulness repeated. The oak that stands in the gale was once a sapling that pushed its roots a little deeper every single day. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night [Psalm 1:2 KJV]. Day and night — not Sunday only, not when the mood takes us.

Here is the truth we keep forgetting: roots grow in calm weather, not in the storm. When the wind hits, it is too late to start digging. The believer who reads, prays, and obeys on the quiet days is the one left standing on the hard ones. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season… and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper [Psalm 1:3 KJV].

So what does the daily habit actually look like? It is not complicated. That is the point.

Open the Word. Even a few verses. Let God speak before the world does. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path [Psalm 119:105 KJV].

Pray. Not a performance — a conversation. Bring Him the day before you live it. Pray without ceasing [1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV].

Then obey the one thing He puts in front of you. Don't wait for a grand calling. Do the next small thing well. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much [Luke 16:10 KJV].

Do you see how the week we have walked through hangs on this? You cannot stay connected to Christ without it. You cannot pursue your purpose without it. You cannot stand storm-proof without it. The daily habit is the thread that ties the whole Christian life together.

And here is the warning: nothing erodes faster than a neglected habit. Miss a day, and you feel little. Miss a week, and the roots loosen. Miss a season, and you wonder why you fell so easily. The enemy rarely topples a believer in one blow — he loosens the soil one skipped day at a time.

So start small, but start today. One chapter. One prayer. One act of obedience. Then do it again tomorrow.

The Christian who shows up daily is not the most impressive in the room. But check on them after the storm. They will still be standing — rooted, fruitful, unmoved. Because they built on the days nobody clapped for.

Don't despise the small daily habit. It is holding everything together…

Connected to Christ — Always!

Why Jesus died so we'd never be cut off from Him…

The truth we must not let slip

Jesus Christ died so that every believer could be permanently joined to Him. The connection was secured at the cross and cannot be undone — but the daily abiding is our responsibility. A connected Christian carries Christ into every hour of the day, lives by His Word, prays as a habit, and walks in obedience. Don't visit the relationship He died to give you — live in it. At all times…

In Pursuit of Your Purpose!

Plain truth for the believer who's tired of drifting…

The question you cannot avoid

Purpose isn't a hidden treasure to find — it's a daily walk to live. It's fuelled by the Word, shaped by obedience, proved in the small faithful steps, and forged in the fire. Stop chasing a calling out there and start carrying the one God has already placed in your hand right here. Walk worthy. Bear fruit. Take the next obedient step. That is the pursuit of your purpose…

"Write this down" is a phrase used to draw attention to essential information that needs to be recorded or remembered. Published weekly on a Wednesday…

Accountability…

Walking close, walking clean, walking together…

The word we’ve gone quiet about

Accountability isn't a leash — it's a lifeline. It's God's design for His people to walk close, walk clean, and walk together. We stand accountable to the Lord first, and then to faithful brothers and sisters who love us enough to sharpen us. It begins in the home, it grows in the church, and it prepares us for the day we'll all stand before Christ. Build it into your daily walk — the Kingdom is too big and the night too near to walk it alone…

Storm-proof Your Christian Life!

Storms come for every believer — but only those built on the Rock will stand…

A storm-proof foundation

The Lord Jesus never promised His people a stormless life — He promised a storm-proof foundation. Every believer will face suffering, temptation, and deception, but only the one who hears and does the Word is built on the Rock. Storm-proofing is a calm-day work: daily Bible, daily prayer, daily obedience in the small things, anchored to Christ Himself. Stop being a hearer only — start being a doer — and your house will stand when the storm hits…

Part Four - Two Churches, Two Outcomes

And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none [Ezekiel 22:30 KJV].

Picking up where Part Three left off…

Two churches stand before us — one with under-shepherding, one without. Same Bibles on the seats. Same songs in the air. Same Saviour named from the front. Two completely different outcomes. Without faithful under-shepherds, the sheep scatter, the lambs are devoured, the wounded fester, the wolves move in unchallenged, and the lost stay lost — even inside the building. With faithful under-shepherds, the sheep are fed real food, the wandering are sought, the wounded are bound up, and believers grow into doers of the Word. One church produces an audience. The other produces a flock. The deciding question is never how big a church is — it is whose sheep these are, and whether they are being looked after. The fed become feeders. The shepherded become shepherds. May the Lord turn many a scattering church back into a shepherding one…

Honouring Fathers — At Home and in the Church

This Father's Day, the UK pauses to honour its dads — and we celebrate a calling the world too often overlooks…

Today, as families across the UK pause to honour their dads with cards, calls, and quiet thank-yous, we want to pause too and celebrate what the world too easily forgets: fatherhood is not merely a biological fact. It is a God-given calling — and a holy one.

We learn it from God Himself. The Lord taught us to pray Our Father which art in heaven [Matthew 6:9 KJV]. At his best, every earthly father is meant to be a small picture of that perfect Father — faithful, present, providing, and full of love.

And that calling carries weight. Scripture gives fathers a clear charge: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord [Ephesians 6:4 KJV]. That is no passing suggestion. A father is called to lead, to teach, to discipline with patience, and above all to point his children to Christ.

In a culture where so many homes are missing that steady hand, the godly father stands out. He is the one who can say, with Joshua, as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD [Joshua 24:15 KJV]. And the promise still stands: train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it [Proverbs 22:6 KJV].

But fatherhood does not stop at the front door. The Church has always needed spiritual fathers — older, faithful men who guide, protect, and disciple the next generation. Paul felt the lack keenly: for though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers [1 Corinthians 4:15 KJV].

Teachers we have in plenty. Fathers in the faith are rarer — and more precious. The Church today is crying out for men who will not merely instruct, but father: men who will pray for the flock, model the walk, and carry the young in their hearts.

But there is hope — and it runs right through Scripture. The very last promise of the Old Testament speaks of God restoring fatherhood: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers [Malachi 4:6 KJV]. That is still His heart today.

So to every father reading this — at home or in the Church — take heart, and take up the calling. You are not just raising children or running a household. Under God, you are shaping souls.

And to those who have lost a father, or never knew one: remember you have a perfect Father in heaven who has promised, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee [Hebrews 13:5 KJV].

Happy Father's Day from all of us at Back to Basics: Christian Living…

No Lone Sheep — Why You Were Never Meant to Walk Alone

The Christian life was built for the flock, not the field…

Picture a single sheep out in an open field. No shepherd. No fold. No flock. To the sheep it might feel like freedom — all that grass, nobody telling it where to go. But any farmer will tell you what it really is. It is a sheep in danger.

That is the picture of the believer who has quietly drifted out of church life.

Maybe it was never a decision. Few people slam the door. They just stop going. A missed Sunday becomes a missed month. The messages dry up. And one day they look around and realise they are out in the field, alone, telling themselves they are doing fine.

Hear me plainly: a sheep away from the flock is not free. It is exposed.

Scripture never imagines a lone-ranger Christian. From the very start God set His people in a body. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another [Hebrews 10:25 KJV]. "The manner of some" — drifting is nothing new. But neither is the danger.

Why were we built for the flock and not the field?

Because sheep need feeding. On your own you snack on whatever is nearest. In the fold you are fed real food by those God has set to feed you. Feed the flock of God which is among you [1 Peter 5:2 KJV].

Because sheep need protecting. The wolf does not go for the middle of the flock — he goes for the straggler. Alone, you are exactly what he is looking for. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour [1 Peter 5:8 KJV].

Because sheep need sharpening. We do not grow in isolation; we grow in company. Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend [Proverbs 27:17 KJV]. A knife cannot sharpen itself, and neither can you.

And here is the part the lone sheep forgets: the flock needs you too. Your absence leaves a gap. The body is not complete when a member walks off. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it [1 Corinthians 12:26 KJV]. You were not only meant to be fed — you were meant to feed. Not only carried — but one day to carry.

So if you have drifted, don't dress it up as freedom. Call it what it is, and come home. The fold is not perfect — no flock this side of heaven is. But it is where the Shepherd has put His sheep, and it is where the safe ones stay.

Here is your step: this week, walk back in. Sit down. Be known. Let yourself be fed, protected, and sharpened — and start being those things for someone else.

You were never meant to walk alone. There are no lone sheep in the Shepherd's plan — only those in the fold, and those in danger. Come back to the flock…
